It is with great sadness that the Setlakwe family must announce the death of the Honorable Raymond C. Setlakwe, on October 14, 2021 at the Thetford Mines Hospital.
Raymond Setlakwe was born July 3, 1928 in Thetford Mines. He was the son of the late Calil Setlakwe and the late Nazlia Nakash and proud descendant of Aziz Setlakwe, the first immigrant of Armenian origin in Quebec, founder of A. Setlakwe Limited and sponsor of many immigrants who made their mark in Canada.
Raymond is survived by his wife and lifelong accomplice, Mrs. Yvette Bourque, his four children; Louise (Philip Lanthier), Paul (Dominique Lanctôt), Ann (Eddy Blouin) and Robert (Danielle Cyr), her six grandchildren; Jonathan and Alitia Duguay, Olivier and Emilie Setlakwe, Philippe and Margo Setlakwe Blouin as well as his seven (and soon 11!) Great-grandchildren.
Brother of the late Richard (late Carmen Languerand) and the late Linda and Stephen (Colette Talbot). He is also survived by many cousins, cousins, nephews and nieces and friends across the world.
Raymond obtained a bachelor's degree from Bishop's University and another in law from Laval University. Bishop's University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2003.
He has dedicated his professional life to running the family business, A. Setlakwe Limité. Respect, transparency and empathy have been at the heart of its relationships with its employees, customers and other business relationships. Throughout his life, Raymond was involved in the civil and community life of Thetford Mines and participated in the support of many causes.
Passionate about politics, he was an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He has known every prime minister of Canada since McKenzie King. Raymond said that in politics he had no enemies, only adversaries.
In 1996, he received the Order of Canada, an honorary distinction awarded by Governor General Roméo Leblanc for his exceptional contribution and commitment. In 2016, the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec awarded him the Medal for Outstanding Merit.
He was subsequently appointed Senator in 2000. Raymond loved his career as a parliamentarian and was especially proud to have contributed to the adoption of Motion No. 44 recognizing the Armenian genocide. His latest initiative involved the appointment of a Canadian ambassador to Armenia.
Raymond was a great sportsman. Young, he was one of the best amateur golfers in Quebec. He also loved skiing and enjoyed being together with his whole family on the slopes of Mont-Sainte-Anne.
Raymond had the faith and the conviction that he was going to join his family in the afterlife. He left in peace after having had the chance to say goodbye to his family and several of his friends? telling each friend of course that he was the last one he had left!
The family will receive condolences on Friday, October 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, the day of the funeral, from 9 a.m. at the Gamache & Nadeau Ltée funeral center, 590, rue St-Alphonse Sud , Thetford Mines. Note that a 10-minute period is allocated to you in order to comply with Public Health instructions on grouping of people.
The religious service of Mr. Raymond Setlakwe will be celebrated on Saturday, October 30 at 11 a.m. in St-Alphonse Church in Thetford Mines. Taking into account the health regulations in force, a maximum number of 250 people may be admitted inside the church. However, it will also be possible to see this celebration live or recorded by clicking on "Diffusion Funeraweb" in the obituary of Mr. Setlakwe, in this obituary.
