BRYNER DR. SERGIUS Cardiologist and early member of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic. Sergius Bryner was born in Vladivostok, Russia in 1915. He came to the United States as a child and lived in San Francisco, Redwood City and Menlo Park. Serge attended Saint Joseph's on the Sacred Heart Grounds in Menlo, Bellermine College Preparatory in Santa Clara and Stanford University. He received his M.D. from Stanford University Medical School in 1941. After graduation, Serge enlisted in the Army, during World War II, as a Captain. He was assigned to the 59th Evacuation Hospital Unit and served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. It was while in France that he met and married his true love and life long companion, Ann. In 1948 he joined the Palo Alto Medical Clinic as an internist. He was the clinic's 25th member. His love for Cardiology led him to study with Dr. Paul Woods of London, England and to serve as a visiting physician at a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland. He took his Cardiology exam in Atlanta, Georgia scoring the highest mark in his class. He was later asked to assist in the preparations of the oral examinations to be taken by future Cardiology candidates. Serge became Chief of Cardiology until his retirement. During his retirement he served as Chief of Electorcardiology for the Stanford Medical Center, attending Cardiologist for the Medical School teaching program and candidate examiner for certification applicants. He was a mentor to many of his former students. Serge was devoted to his work and his patients. His patients, many whom he became close friends with, dearly loved him. Sergius is survived by his loving wife, Ann, his children, Carol (husband, Steven), Marget (husband, Daniel), Kitty, James and Suzanne and his brother, Cyril (wife, Alma). He was grandfather to Willy (1966-1992) and Renee and great grandfather to Matthew, Amber and Brittney. A man of great faith, compassion and gentleness. Serge will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his great love for the natural world and his selfless dedication to making our world a better place in which to live. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
