Ernest A. Johnson, 73, a resident of Hancock, passed away Thursday morning January 30, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a patient for the past month.
He was born on April 27, 1940, Dollar Bay, a son of the late Arne and Irene (Kemppainen) Johnson. He was raised in Hubbell and graduated from the Lake Linden High School with the class of 1958. He then attended Suomi College.
Mr. Johnson had worked a variety of jobs in the Copper Country before becoming manager at the Sherwin Williams Paint Store where he retired from after 20 years.
Ernie was member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. He also was active in the community being a former member of the Hancock Fire Department, U.P. Whitetails Association where he was a past president, and B.P.O.E. #381 of Hancock. Currently he was active with the Knights of the Round Table and B.P.O.E. #404 of Calumet. In his younger days, Ernie enjoyed pitching for various softball teams. More recently, he was a member of the Wyandotte Hills Golf League and enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing his whole life.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a son Joseph Johnson.

His sister: Gloria (Eugene) Taylor of Dollar Bay
A special cousin: Richard Johnson of Detroit and Arizona and several more cousins.
Ernie was fortunate to have made invaluable friendships throughout his life.
Funeral services for Ernie will be held 12 noon Monday February 3, 2014, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. DJ Rasner to officiate.
Friends may call on Monday February 3, 2014, from 10 am until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the Senior Meals Program, Omega House or the charity of one?s choice in memory of Ernest A. Johnson.
