Charles H. Gamache was a Private First Class in the Army during World War II. Charles resided in Hampden County, Massachusetts before enlisting on April 23, 1943. At the time of enlistment, Charles was 18 years old, had 3 years of high school education and was single, without dependents. One year later, Charles was captured by Nazi Germany while serving in Italy, and was sent to Stalag 2B near Hammerstein, West Prussia where 6,291 other American POWs were held. Charles' capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on January 23, 1944, and the last report was made on June 12, 1945. Based on these two reports, Charles was imprisoned for at least 506 days (1 year and ~5 months). The average duration of imprisonment was 363 days. Ultimately, Charles was returned to military control, liberated or repatriated.

Died:
- Charles H. Gamache after not be truthful about his age he joined the US Army at age 17. He was a POW in Poland during WWII for 2 years he was awarded a Bronze Star. Once he was released from being a POW he left the US Army and joined the US Navy where he retired after 20 years. While he was in the US Navy he was a Gunners Mate.
