- [S5] Obituary.
NORWAY ? Former Republic resident Harry Francis Miron, 92, died June 5, 2021 at Evergreen Meadows in Norway, from complications due to a stroke.
Mr. Miron was born on Sept. 14,1928 in Kingsford, to James Miron and Angeline King.
A 1946 graduate of Kingsford High School, Harry was a popular ski jumper and married Lois Marie Elliott, also of Kingsford, in 1951.
After non-combat service in the U.S. Army, he worked a wide variety of jobs in the western states and the U.P. before settling in Republic as a Cleveland Cliffs employee and staunch member of the AFL-CIO.
Harry served two terms as union president of Local 5440 as well as serving as a grievance man and as vice president.
After living in North Republic, he and Lois bought ?The Farm,? three hundred acres on Republic?s Capp?s Creek just out of town, and together they made a particularly beautiful home and domain.
Harry was a very outgoing person with a deep curiosity about other people, a knack for making friends, and a love for nature.
Always civically minded, Harry supported the Republic community for decades, volunteering and lending a hand to worthy projects whenever he could.
Harry was a go-to kind of guy, a do-it-yourself jack of all trades, known for his stories and sense of humor, especially his elaborate Fourth of July parade costumes.
Retiring as the last payroll miner at Republic Mine, Harry commemorated the mine?s closure by nailing his work boots high up on a downtown power pole.
Traveling extensively with Lois during his retirement, Harry spent many winters in Guatemala, Mexico and Arizona before returning to Republic to open Antiques of Republic with his son, Michael.
He is survived by Lois, his wife of 70 years; nine children, James, Jacqueline, Mary, Michael, Jeanne, Joseph, Sharon, Teresa, and Daniel, their spouses; 44 nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, along with a host of friends, including special family friends, Kevin and Teresa Caliguri.
There will be no public funeral service and a memorial is not planned at this time.
Those who wish to honor Harry can donate time or resources to the Republic Heritage Garden or Republic Historical Society.
Condolences can be sent to Lois Miron, North 1669 U.S. Highway 8, Norway, MI 49870.
