ORANGE- Ryan Joseph Colturi, 38, of East Road, died unexpectedly at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Wednesday, October 9, 2013.
Born in Greenfield on August 14, 1975, he was a son of Keith and Anne (Songer) Colturi and grew up in Orange. He attended Orange schools and a year at Pioneer Regional in Northfield. Moving back to Orange in 1992 and graduating with the Class of 1993 at Mahar Regional High School.
Ryan was a Little League player and stand-out athlete playing lacrosse and soccer at Pioneer and Mahar.
Ryan enlisted into the United States Coast Guard during the Gulf War on January 31, 1995 and was honorably discharged on June 25, 1997. While in the Coast Guard, he received the Perfect Conduct Medal and was an avid sharpshooter and award winning marksman.
His interests and hobbies were music; he was an avid musician- a singer, songwriter who was the lead singer for the band ?KILLSTEPP? back in the early 2000?s. In 2002, he performed in front of a crowd of approximately 20,000 people with his band ?KILLSTEPP? at LocoBazooka in Worcester. He played many venues in New England.
He loved to read, and travel about the United States by hiking with his backpack and tent. He was an avid skate boarder and snow boarder.
A very spiritual person, he was in the process of writing more lyrics and music to accompany them.
Ryan worked as a cook and had his own carpentry business building decks, walkways, and patios.
Survivors include his daughters, Skyla Juliette Colturi of Pembroke and Aurora Bethea Holmes of Morris, Connecticut; his parents, Keith and Anne Colturi of Orange; a brother, Matthew K. Colturi of Salem; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Barbara Colturi of Falmouth; aunts and uncles, Dan Colturi of Falmouth, Doreen and Scott Hodgkins of Gardner, John and Janice Songer of Phillipston, Laurel and Clay Schmick of Tully, and Barry and Tammy Songer of Orange; and many cousins. Ryan also had a biological family; he leaves behind his biological father whom he loved dearly, Raymond Joseph Gamache of Flagstaff Arizona and his biological sister, Crista Pond Klein from Amherst, MA, whom he felt a very close spiritual connection with. He leaves paternal grandmother, Meme? Priscilla Gamache, Pepe? Roland Gamache preceding him in death, a very close biological cousin, Cathy Gamache Thebeau and her mother, Aunt Brenda Gamache. Ryan also leaves behind many friends, his best friend, Cate Bednarz DeGrood from North Carolina, and his closest companion for the last 4 years, his dog ?August?, or ?Auggie?.
Ryan was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Irene (Dombroski) and John Songer.
Calling hours will be held on October 20, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. at Witty?s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on October 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake Street, Athol.
