THERESA M. PAYEA HINESBURG - Theresa M. Payea, 69, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday, June 20, 2011, after a long battle with Picks Disease. She was born in Winooski on April 5, 1942, the daughter of the late Theodore J. and Fernande (L'Ecuyer) Gamache. She attended St. Francis Xavier School, graduating in 1957, and then graduated from Winooski High School in 1961. After graduation she worked in various food service positions throughout her life. On Oct. 16, 1965, she was married to Gary Payea in St. Francis Xavier Church. Theresa was an accomplished cook and baker. She enjoyed family dinners and holiday gatherings, she was an avid bingo player and she volunteered in many ways, especially in her church. She was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Clement and Richard Gamache; and three sisters, Annette Gamache, Claire Burdick and Reina Aussant. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Theresa is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gary Payea; her son, Mark Payea and his companion, Misty Normandy, of Graniteville; and her son, Michael Payea of South Burlington and her grandson, Joseph Michael Payea, as well as her daughter-in-law, Terry Payea, of Monkton. She also leaves behind three brothers and their spouses, James and Theresa Gamache of Burlington, Paul and Marianna Gamache of Swanton and Gerard and Mary Jane Gamache of Beebe Plains. She is also survived by one sister, Andrea and her husband, Palmer Irish, of South Burlington; three sisters-inlaw, Barbara Gamache of Essex Center and Suzanne Gamache and Carol Shappy and her husband, Keith, of Burlington; as well as several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Visiting Nurse Association for the care they gave Theresa so she could remain in her home. We would also like to thank the VNA adult daycare staff in Williston, as well as the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, for all the care and support they gave her in their many ways. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Jude the Apostle Church of Hinesburg. Visiting hours will be in the church hall on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. Gifford Funeral Service, 22 Depot St., Richmond in charge of arrangements.
