Wilfred David Gamache, 80, of Southern Pines died on Tuesday (Dec. 28, 2004) at his home. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church of Southern Pines with the Very Rev. Jeffery A. Ingham as celebrant. Interment will be in Bethesda Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Dec. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Powell Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
Mr. Gamache was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Ludlow, Mass, a son of the late David and Isabel Middleton Gamache. He enlisted in the USMC at age 17 with his parents? permission. He received his basic training at Paris Island, S.C., and was assigned to Camp Pendleton, Calif. His 4th Marine Division participated in the invasions of Kwajalein Atoli, Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. He was recalled and served for 13 months active duty during the Korean conflict.
He married the former Mary Edith Dennis on June 8, 1946, and they resided in Indian Orchard, Mass. The Gamaches moved to Southern Pines in 1978. They founded the former Mary Dennis Manor, which they operated until 1999 as Southern Pines Manor. Mr. Gamache was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Burkott.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Edith Gamache; son, Dennis Gamache of Naperville, Ill; daughters, Elizabeth Benoit of Hampton, Va., and Kathleen Tomlinson of Aberdeen; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
