  [S5] Obituary. GEORGE GAMACHE OBITUARY Gamache, George A. COHOES - George A. Gamache, fondly known as "Poppy," passed away on January 28, 2022, at home, as he wished, surrounded by his family, at the age of 77, after a courageous battle with cancer. George was born in Cohoes on November 5, 1945. He was the son of the late Paul Gamache and Eleanor Halacy and the eldest of seven children. George was honored and rewarded by the Cohoes Police and Fire Departments in 1957 at the age of 12 for saving his siblings from a house fire. George served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966. After retiring from Troy Bilt, he became a member and past commander of the Cohoes American Legion Post 476. George was known to make everybody that he encountered laugh and was a man who was loved by many. He enjoyed fishing, spending summers with his family in Slyvan Beach, and watching the Yankees and football games with family and friends. George is survived by his loving wife, Dawn (Oliver) Gamache; his children, Michael (Tracy), David (Liz), Veronica (Bernie), and Heidi (Sean); his daughter-in-law, Valarie; his stepchildren, Dawn, Barbara, Darcy, and George; his siblings, Roger (Colleen), and Darlene (Scott); his sister-in-law, Maggie; his grandchildren, Steven, Alisha (Anthony), Seany, Elizabella, Ethan, Payton, Alex, Amanda, and Cheyne; and his great-grandchildren, Carter, Lily, and Luca. George is also survived by his grandchildren, Kerissa, Bre, George, and Isabelle who he raised with his wife, as well as his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; stepfather, David White; son, Steven; sisters, Charlene and Edith White; and brothers, Raymond and Robert Gamache. The family would like to thank Jamie and Frank from The Community Hospice for the care they provided for George and his family. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Marra Funeral Home, Cohoes. Services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be held in the Waterford Rural Cemetery. Published by Albany Times Union on Feb. 1, 2023.
