  [S5] Obituary. William D. Schlomer, 94, departed this earthly life on Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Brunswick Nursing and Rehab Center. Bill was born to Daniel C. and Mary R. (Alexander) Schlomer on June 26, 1927, in Longwood, Missouri, where he spent his childhood. He was affectionately known as "Billy Dean" by his aunts and uncles until he was grown and was called "Porky" by his friends. He attended school in Longwood and graduated from Houstonia High School in 1945. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Chicago. It was there that he met the love of his life and future bride, Margaret Gamache, who had moved to Chicago from her hometown in Michigan to find work after the War. They were united in marriage in Bessemer, Michigan on September 4, 1948. Bill was a farmer all his life, although he occasionally worked at other jobs such as school bus driver and had a successful hauling business with his trusty dump truck in the 1960s, helping build some of the new interstate highways. He is survived by his wife, of the home, son David Schlomer and daughter Rebecca Barnes (Jeff); sister, Mary Elizabeth Adams; daughter-in-law Kim Schlomer; seven grandchildren, Sam Barnes (Ashley), Dan Barnes (Angie), Tim Barnes (Lindsay), Allison Barnes, Maria Bradford (Domanick), Lorelei Cunningham (Trevor) and Jake Heishman (Ashley), as well as seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Margaret Francis (Madge) Coffelt; son Robert Allen Schlomer, and grandson, Neil Schlomer. The family wishes to thank the staff of the John Cochran VA hospital in St. Louis, the staff at Brunswick Nursing and Rehab, and the staff of Hometown Healthcare for the wonderful and loving care they provided at the end of his life. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Longwood Presbyterian Church in Longwood with Rev. Roberta Karchner officiating. Pallbearers will be Sam Barnes, Dan Barnes, Tim Barnes, Allison Barnes, Paul Coffelt, and Dave Boughton. Honorary pallbearers will be J.R. and Sharon Greer; Earl and Judy Hunter. Visitation will be noon until service time at the church. Burial will be in Longwood Cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Post 2591 and US Navy. Masks are required for those attending the service. The family requests donations in Bill's memory be made to the church or their favorite charity in care of the funeral home.
