- Brian Boru Pipe Band Takes Second Place At NH Competition
The (Cape Cod) Enterprise, September 22, 2017
The Brian Boru Pipe Band of Falmouth at the 42nd annual New Hampshire Highland Games. The group placed second in its division. More than 30 pipe bands were in attendance at the event, held September 15 through 17.
The Brian Boru Pipe Band of Falmouth has returned from the New Hampshire Highland Games, where it placed second in its division, among the 15 bands competing. The band, under the direction of Pipe Major Roger Gamache of Mashpee, was also awarded the Most Improved Band in its division.
One of the largest Scottish festivals in the country, the NH Highland games features top Scottish bands, Highland dancing and cuisine, athletics and other cultural attractions. One festival highlight is the pipe band competition with more than 30 bands from the US and Canada competing. The bands perform together in a ceremony called massed bands to open the games before the competition.
The Brian Boru band was formed in 1998 by Roger Gamache and his wife, Peg Donoghue. It has traveled to Ireland several times, competing in the All-Ireland Pipe Band Competitions, and performed at the Rose of Tralee Festival in County Kerry. The band also performs at local Falmouth events, such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July parades and at St. Patrick?s Day celebrations throughout New England.
The band will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year and is inviting anyone interested in learning the pipes or drums to join its fall classes, which are being formed. The band teaches for free and practices at Waldorf School in Cotuit on Thursday nights at 7 PM. To join the band, call 508-685-9606.
