FALL RIVER -- The Rev. Daniel Antonin Gamache, 80, who served for 53 years as a priest and was pastor of St. Joseph's Church in New Bedford at the time of his retirement in 1988, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at the Catholic Memorial Home after a long illness. Father Gamache, who lived at the Notre Dame Church Rectory and, more recently, at the Cardinal Medeiros Residences on Elsbree Street, was born in Fall River, son of the late Adolphe and Clairina (Lanneville) Gamache. After his graduation from Blessed Sacrament Grammar School in Fall River, Father Gamache prepared for the priesthood at College St. Alexandre de Limbour, Quebec, and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. Father Gamache was ordained on Feb. 24, 1945, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River by the Most Rev. James E. Cassidy, D.D., then bishop of the Fall River Diocese. He was assigned to St. Jacques Church in Taunton, where he was a curate for 24 years, and was a chaplain at Taunton State Hospital the last 17 of those years. Father Gamache was transferred in summer 1969 to St. Jean Baptiste Church in Fall River, initially as administrator and later as pastor, remaining at the Fall River parish until spring 1977. Father Gamache was transferred to St. Joseph's Church, becoming the New Bedford parish's fourth pastor, in 1977 after the retirement of the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henri Hamel. He was pastor until his retirement on June 15, 1988. In 1985, St. Joseph's celebrated its 75th anniversary, undergoing a major renovation in anticipation of a year of festivities. The year was memorable for Father Gamache, who celebrated his 40th anniversary in the priesthood. For his golden jubilee, Father Gamache celebrated Mass at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Fall River on Feb. 25, 1995. Earlier that month, Father Gamache's 50th year in the priesthood was celebrated at a prayer and dinner attended by 14 priests who had served with him. The Most Rev. Sean Patrick O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., bishop of the Fall River Diocese, presided at the prayer service. Survivors include a sister, Jeanne T. Gamache of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway.
