BURRILLVILLE- Brother Armand L. Gamache, S.C., (Brother John Damian), 86, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died September 20, 2011 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI.
Born in Nashua, NH, he was the son of the late Lionel Gamache and Marie (Gingras) Gamache.
Brother Armand entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1939 at Granby, Qubec, Canada. He pronounced his first vows in 1942 in Granby, Qubec, and his perpetual vows in 1948 at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI. Brother Armand was a professed religious for 69 years, serving in a variety of locations including Andover and Sharon, Massachusetts, Woonsocket, RI, Lewiston, Maine, and Nashua, NH, as a missionary in Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Africa, for 17 years, and in St. Albans, England for 19 years. Brother Armand served as a teacher for 50 years. He also provided auxiliary assistance in schools in data processing and printing. He had been a volunteer at the Steere Farm Elementary School in Burrillville, RI, for the past few years. Brother Armand was also an athlete, playing tennis and golf throughout his life.
Brother Armand was recognized with a Normal School Diploma by the Quebec Education Department, with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Michaels College, Colchester, Vermont, and with a Master of Education degree from Rivier College in Nashua, NH, as well as qualifications from the University of South Africa.
Brother Armand is survived by his sisters, Pearl Sciuto of Derry, NH, Irene Boucher of Nashua, NH, Pauline Lamb of Hudson, NH, and his brother, Robert, also of Nashua, NH. His brother, Fernand (Fudgy), and sister, Madeleine Gamache, preceded him in death.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Armands memory can be made to the African Mission Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home 1496 Victory Hwy. Oakland RI.
