Died:
- James D. Thompson; 83, of Henning, died on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at TriCounty Hospital in Wadena.
James David Thompson was born in Oslo, Minn., on March 19, 1926, the son of Alex and Jessie (Clausen) Thompson. He grew up and attended school in Neche, N.D. At the age of 17, Jim entered the U.S. Navy and ironically, he never did learn to swim. He served in World War II and was discharged on May 18, 1946. After his discharge he was married to Louise Moore in
Tintah, Minn. They moved to Neche, N.D., and later to Minneapolis.
In 1950 they moved to Excelsior, Minn., and in 1954 to Chanhassen, Minn. Jim was self employed as an auto mechanic for over 30 years. He was instrumental in the formation of the first volunteer fire department in Chanhassen and served as its first Fire Chief. Jim sold his business and began working for MnDOT.
He and Louise moved to Henning in 1978. He continued to work for MnDOT until 1988 when he retired. He then worked for Oakwood Golf Course in Henning, maintaining equipment and helping in the maintenance of the course. He was a craftsman. He made many things for his church which are still in service today. Jim's creations remain in the hearts and homes of his children and friends. He was devoted to his wife and children and he will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his children: Steve (Deb) Thompson of Park Rapids, Doug (Bev) Thompson of Prior Lake, Minn., James, Jr. (Stu) Thompson of Page, Ariz., Colleen (friend Deb Huot) Thompson of Crookston, and Joan (Steve) Meyerson of Clearwater, Fla.; brothers: Russell Thompson of Oregon, Ronnie (Priscilla) Thompson of Minnesota, Frank (Jo) Thompson of Minnesota, Richard (Sherry) Thompson of Oregon; sisters: Gloria (Jim) McGrath of Washington, and Lois Menke of North Dakota; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant daughter, Nancee; and his daughter-in-law: JoAnne.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with parish vigil service at 7 p.m.; visitation resumes for an hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday
Funeral: 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Henning
