- Francis Paul Sobek (Frank) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 1, 2024. He was born on June 18, 1929, to George and Anna Sobek in Hammond, Indiana as the youngest of 7 children.
He graduated from the University of San Francisco, where he played on the 1949 NIT championship-winning basketball team. During his time in San Francisco, he met his soulmate, Helen, on a blind date at the iconic rotating bar at the Mark Hopkins hotel. And just like that, Frank and Helen got married on June 16, 1951.
Soon after their nuptials, Frank was drafted into the military and served honorably overseas in Germany. Upon his return to Wellesley, Massachusetts, he started his career in sales at Ford Motor Company. Frank and Helen welcomed their first four of six children, Diane, Duke, Jim, and Tom.
In search of warmer weather, the Sobeks settled in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the family continued to grow with the additions of Nancy and David. Here, Frank worked as a sales rep with Sigler Reeves for the remainder of his career.
Through the years, Frank and Helen?s beloved home became the family gathering spot as they became Papa and Nana to 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Frank loved his family above all else and was a man of deep and steadfast faith. He took great pride in tending to his bountiful citrus trees, enjoyed daily happy hours with Helen listening to classical music, and crafted his famous salads before dinner. His grandchildren have fond memories of Papa?s blueberry pancakes on weekend mornings followed by a round of basketball in the pool.
Frank was a devoted, humble patriarch with a quick wit, and will be deeply missed as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend.
A memorial service will be held on March 18, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Parish, 7655 E. Main Street, Scottsdale, AZ at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
