- It is with a sad heart that we share the news of the passing of our family's beautiful matriarch, Bibi LaVigne Duquette. Bibi was an amazing woman, who was filled with much energy, joy and love for her family. She was the wife of Leon, and mother to Judy, Lee, and Jeanne. Bibi was blessed to be a grandma, great grandma, and even a great-great grandma. She was also blessed to be "Auntie" to hundreds of nieces and nephews, and cousins by the dozens as well. Bibi was born in Cooks Michigan and was the youngest girl and the last of the original Alphonse and Josephine (Thibault) LaVigne family. The family moved to Manistique shortly after she was born. Bibi is welcomed home to rest in her "Garden" by her 10 sisters and brothers, her parents, many nieces and nephews, and her beloved husband Leon and many of his family.
On December 7, 1939, Bibi married Leon H. Duquette in Manistique, MI. They had three children and were active members of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Bibi was active with the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" in the Detroit area during WWII, and while living in Manistique, she was a telephone operator and a waitress at the Surf Restaurant.
Bibi and Leon moved to Escanaba in 1966 where they were active members at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Bibi received her GED High School Equivalency Certificate at Escanaba Area High School and worked at The Fair Store.
In 1979 Bibi and Leon moved back to Manistique to a home on Indian Lake and also spent the winters in Wildwood, FL. At both homes they enjoyed their retirement years with their families, traveling, riding on the pontoon boat, fishing, playing cards (especially bridge and poker) and bingo, and socializing. After Leon's death in 1987, Bibi moved into town and continued to be an active member of St. Francis de Sales Church and enjoyed many activities at the Manistique Senior Center. In 2012 she moved to Dexter, MI to live with her daughter Jeanne and her family. In 2015, as her health continued to fail, she moved into an Adult Foster Care home in Chelsea, MI. Her final peaceful hours were spent in the loving care of Arbor Hospice in Saline, MI.
She is survived by her children, Judy LaLonde, Leon Jr. (Dorothy) Duquette, and Jeanne (David) Brakhage; grandchildren, Rob (Lisa) LaLonde, Julie (Bob) Wilkinson, Randy (Colleen) LaLonde, Dennis (Michelle) Duquette, Jennifer Johnson, Laura Brakhage, and Daniel Brakhage; great grandchildren, Jacob Wilkinson, Heather LaLonde, Lindsay LaLonde, Nick Mayo, Katherine Wilkinson, Zachary Duquette, Clare LaLonde, Allison Duquette, Kaitlin Duquette, Matthew Duquette, Nate Johnson, Ben Johnson, and Alex Johnson; and great-great grandchildren, Lily Wilkinson and Liam Hanig; sisters-in-law, Jerry LaVigne, Betty Lasich, Martha Duquette, and Carol Duquette; and brother-in-law, John (Joanne) Duquette; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Deanne Duquette; brothers, Milton, Alphonse Jr., Orville, and Frederick; sisters, Murial, Madeline, Myrilda "Ditta", Melissa, Cecile "Sis", and Myrtle; son-in-law, Robert W. LaLonde; and many of husband Leon's beloved family members.
Visitation will be held from 11:00am-1:00pm on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique, MI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00pm with Father Ben Paris officiating and a luncheon will follow at the parish center. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 11:30am.
