Fred H. Smith, a pioneer of 1842, died at his home on North Park avenue Monday afternoon of senile debility at the age of eighty-eight years.
Old residents will remember Mr. Smith. When he came hero In the early forties Oshkosh was scarcely a lumbering village and Indian trading post, Robert Eden and Matthew Lancaster, two Englishmen of the aristocracy, but who were "second sons", lived in Oshkosh at that time, and they with Fred H. Smith formed an Inseparable trio who fished and hunted and sailed much of time. Later Mr. Smith went Into the implement business and retired ten years ago. Most of the Winnebago county farmers became acquainted with him.
The deceased leaves seven children. Five of them are daughters and their names follow; Mrs. Fred Salinger, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Mrs. T. S. Ryan of Waterloo, N. D.; Mrs. Henry Behring; and Mrs. Carrie Hurd of Almond, Wis. The names of the sons are Robert Smith of Oshkosh, and William Smith of England.
The remains were taken to Omro Monday evening. The funeral will be held In that village tomorrow.
