Phyllis Stensland Obituary

Phyllis Stensland, 90 of Hampton, passed away peacefully in her home after a long and healthy life. Born and raised in Windham, Phyllis spent her early years enjoying time with her many cousins, brother Walter and sister Arlene. Phyllis met her husband, Carl, at Windham High and they shared over 60 years of love together. They shared countless laughs, filled their home with warmth and cherished their sons Michael (Janice) and Paul (Debbie). Phyllis and Bud loved being parents and also served as mentors to anyone else who needed love (or a hug) in their community. Phyllis truly led a life of service. She devoted 49 years to supporting the children of Hampton Elementary School. Phyllis truly loved working with students and often said "I need them more than they need me." The children, their families and her coworkers who became family sustained her heart. Phyllis also devoted many years to the American Cancer Society where she bonded with both survivors and those in treatment.
Phyllis was always thinking of others. Her blueberry pies made from freshly picked berries, paired with a Hallmark card remain legendary. Phyllis had the unique ability to make you feel valued, heard and loved, no matter what circumstance came your way. She always knew what to say and when to say it.
Over the years, there was time for fun along the way too. Phyllis and "Bud" went on many memorable adventures from vacations with their grandchildren Matt and Juli (Patrick) on the Jersey Shore, to eating Sundae School ice cream on the Cape with Tracey (Mike) and Carl, Debbie and Paul. They loved taking trips to the lake visiting Michael and Janice, cruising and visiting Charlie and Karen in Florida with their dear niece Charlene, her husband Fred and their families. Phyllis Stensland will never be replaced. She was everyone's special person and we are all better for knowing and loving Phyllis.
Thank you to all who have enriched her life, especially her grandnieces Amber (Andrew), Kena (Herman), Karyn (Josh) and Cyndi (Alex) and your families. Phyllis' special friends Susie, Diane, Ellen and Karen are among many who gave her support and true companionship. Phyllis will be missed by her brother Walter (Mary Jane), nephews (Ricky and Danny) and many special cousins as well. To Charlene, your bond with "Auntie" has been a gift. To her many great grandchildren (Hannah, Holden, Henley, Quinn and Logan), we will surely keep Memere's memory alive through daily acts of kindness. Special appreciation to Gloria and her spiritual family from Our Lady of Lourdes who met Phyllis for prayer and communion every Sunday. The family also wishes to send a sincere thank you to Margaret and Care Plus More for allowing Phyllis to live in her home and enjoy her beautiful deck over the past year. Phyllis is now reunited in Heaven with her sister Arlene, friend Joan Dupuis, mother Lillian Gamache and of course, her greatest love, Bud.
A Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday July 3, at 11 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church 41 Cedar Swamp Rd, Hampton. Burial will follow in Litchfield Cemetery, Hampton. Relatives and friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 10AM until the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Renovation Fund (41 Cedar Swamp Rd Hampton) or the Fletcher Memorial Library (257 Main St Hampton).
