  Memorial playground built with love Dan Durand, Standard-Times staff writer LAKEVILLE -- The Alexander R. Gamache Memorial Playground is up and running -- a fitting tribute to a young boy who loved to play outside. The playground was built in memory of Alex, an 18-month-old who succumbed to leukemia almost two years ago. Ted Dellarocco, Alex's loving uncle and godfather, was the driving force behind building the playground at the former Ted Williams Camp. After Alex, son of Robert and Ann Gamache of Bedford Street, died in 1994, Mr. Dellarocco vowed to build the playground. About 200 people attended the dedication ceremony last Sunday at which Mr. Dellarocco spoke of Alex with love and devotion. It was those feelings that drove Mr. Dellarocco, a former clown with the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus, to be at Alex's side trying to keep the youngster's spirits up while he went through often difficult chemotherapy sessions at Children's Hospital in Boston. Mr. Dellarocco said the playground, which took about 18 months to complete, was a fitting memorial to the toddler. "He loved the outdoors. He loved swings," Mr. Dellarocco said. Mr. Dellarocco is a landscaper and with the help of his brother, Tim, the playground was transformed into something more -- and ended up triple its original size. It features swings, a wooden train and fire engine, slides and see-saws. It is also landscaped with flowers, trees, picnic tables, benches and a gazebo. The playground has been a hit with the children, who can be seen almost any time of the day playing on the various amusements.
