Abraham Meritzer dies; Food Dealers' Ambassador Abraham Meritzer, 83, of 463 Mistletoe Ave., "goodwill ambassador" of the retail food dealers here and a prominent retired Youngstown grocer, died of a stroke at 6:30 pm Tuesday in South Side Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Meritzer, "honest Abe" to his friends and customers, had been blind for 28 years. His poetry,homespun philosophy, and messages of strength and hope to the sick and bereaved were appreciated by many. He was a member of B'nai B'rith and the Retail Grocers Association. Mr. Meritzer was one of the area's pioneer grocers. He formerly owned the old Princess and Rialto theaters here. The octogenarian had been active in affairs of the Brownlee Woods community during its early years. BORN IN AUSTRIA Mr.Meritzer was born July 20, 1878 in Merit, Austria, a son of Samuel and Golda Sigal Meritzer, and came to Youngstown from Pittsburgh more than 50 years ago. His wife, the former Fanny Sigal, died in 1959. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1953. Mr. Mertizer leaves two daughters, Mrs. Fred Adelstein of Cleveland and Mrs. Morris S. Rosenblum of Youngstown; three sisters, Mrs.Ethel Rosenberg and Mrs. Albert Ichelson, both of San Francisco, and Mrs.Sidney Carriello of Los Angeles; two brothers, Manuel of Hollywood. Fla and Louis of New York; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Thursday at the Shriver-Allison North Side Funeral Home There are no calling hours.
