It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Joseph Paul Marion on January 15, 2023 at the age of 95.
Born on December 8, 1927, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, he was the eldest of eight children born to L. Paul Marion and Marie J. Tytgat. After pursuing studies in business administration, he worked for a few years for Picardy Limited in Alberta before returning to Winnipeg, where he established his own business, Manor House Cafeterias. He then purchased R. Smith (1960) Limited, responsible for feeding Canadian Pacific workers.
Grandson of Joseph Aldéric Marion, who inspired him throughout his life, Dad was a man of faith, proud of his French-Canadian roots. Very involved in the community, in 1964 he was elected to the St. Boniface School Board. In 1971, he ran for municipal office and was elected councilor for the Taché ward, then deputy mayor of the new unity of Winnipeg. In 1973, during the provincial elections, he was elected in the riding of Saint-Boniface as a Liberal.
His family will remember his enjoyment of playing cards and especially crib. He loved music, traveling, the Montreal Canadiens and the Winnipeg Jets, but above all, he loved being surrounded by his large family.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 56 years, Pierrette Masserey (2006), his second wife of 14 years, Colette Moureaux (2021), his great-granddaughter Élise Marion Hall (2020), his brothers, Guy, Marc, Rosario, Raymond and Georges.
He is survived by his children: Jacqueline, Jean-Marc (Hélène) Claude (Laurie), Louise (Douglas), Jacques (Janine) and Paul (Lisa); his grandchildren: Tristan Field-Jones; Sébastien Marion (Danielle Gamache and their daughters Brielle and Belle), Nadia Marion (Thomas Hall and their daughter Camille); Danielle, Justin and Mélanie Marion; Luc, Robert and Marc Grant; his sister Marie-Jeanne, his brother Roland (Darlene), his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and friends in Canada and France.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Actionmarguerite (Foyer Valade) for the care provided to Dad. The funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint-Boniface.

The eldest of eight children he was born to L. Paul Marion and Marie J. Tytgat December 8, 1927, in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba. Following studies in business administration he worked for Picardy Limited of Winnipeg as an accountant and manager for several years in Alberta, before returning to Winnipeg where he established Manor House Cafeterias, later purchasing R. Smith (1960) Ltd., catering to rail workers of the Canadian Pacific.
Our father was a man of faith, proud of his French-Canadian roots, and inspired by his grandfather Joseph Aldéric Marion's life of service to the community. In 1964, he was elected to the Saint-Boniface School Board. In 1971 he agreed to run in the municipal elections he agreed, was elected councillor for the Taché ward, and the following year was elected deputy mayor for Winnipeg's newly created unicity. In 1973, he ran and was elected as a Liberal in the provincial elections for Saint-Boniface. He was also President of the Winnipeg Executives' Association and the Carleton Club.
We will always remember his joy in playing cards and Crib. He loved music and travel, the Montreal Canadians and the Winnipeg Jets, but mostly, he loved spending time with family.
He was predeceased by his wife Pierrette Masserey, his second wife Colette Moureaux, his great-granddaughter Élise Marion Hall, his brothers, Guy, Marc, Rosario, Raymond, and Georges.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family thanks the staff of Actionmarguerite-(Foyer Valade) for their care and compassion in the last two years.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Cathedral.
