- In 1883, Ferdinand Gamache, with his wife, Julia Lambert Gamache, came to Dakota Territory from Dayton, Minnesota. They lo¬cated in Hickman Township on land now owned by James Reints. Mr. Gamache filed the first claim in Hickman Town ship and with a final payment of four dollars on March 20 , 1890 he received a patent on the land. They had ten children, who were: John, Julie, Louise, George, Peter, Georgiana, Ida, Cecile, Fred, and Philip.
Mr. Gamache put up a sod shanty, which was their home until a two story frame house was built several years later. Here the Ga¬mache's passed through all the ups and downs of pioneer life. In 1902, they returned to Minnesota to live. On a visit to South Dakota, Mr. Gamache died and is buried in Langford's Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Gamache is also buried there.
Their son, George, was Postmaster at Andover, S.D., from May 15, 1893 until March 10, 1896. His sister, Julia Gamache worked in the post office with him until her marriage to Selden Colcord. The ten children are all deceased, but there are many grandchildren living, mostly in Minnesota. By Mrs. Newton Jones
