ORANGE - Almon F. Dirth Sr., 92, of Putnam Street, died on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Born in Orange on September 26, 1923, he was a son of the late Arthur Dirth Sr. and Jessie (Carey) and grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School in 1941. While in high school, Almon was a pitcher on the baseball team.
Following high school he worked briefly for Union Tool and Orange Lumber before enlisting into the United States Army during World War Two.
During his time in the Army, Almon served with the 2nd Armored Division under General Patton as a medic and saw action at the Battle of the Bulge. Almon received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart before being honorably discharged. Almon returned to Normandy after the war to visit different sites. He also attended several reunions of the 2nd Armored Division in Texas over the years.
On August 23, 1997, Almon married Marjorie (Cloukey), dancing down the aisle, and have enjoyed their 18 years of marriage. Almon was previously married to Doris M. (Cutter) for 46 years until her death on August 5, 1992.
Almon worked for the Rodney Hunt Company in Orange for 39 years before retiring and had previously worked for the Orange Foundry.
For 35 years, Almon ran Hillside gardens where he was able to enjoy is passion of growing plants and helping people beautify their homes and decorate their loved ones graves, which he truly received much pleasure and took great pride in doing so.
Almon enjoyed dancing, hunting and fishing, especially with his grandsons.
A member of the Orange American Legion Post #172, he had also been a member of the Athol- Orange Elks Lodge #1837.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Marjorie Dirth of Orange; a son, Almon F. Dirth Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Laconia, NH; a daughter, Linda S. Gamache and her husband, Peter, of Campton, NH; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a brother Arthur Dirth of Orange.
A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Witty's Funeral Home in Orange, with the Rev. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor of the Athol Congregational Church officiating.
Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.
Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.
