Sponsor this page First Postmaster of Pelkie From "Pioneering in Pelkie" by the Sturgeon Valley Historical Society 1985: Biography of Theodore Duquette, by Helen Duquette Boudreau (daughter): Theodore Duquette was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1875. After the death of his mother, he came to the USA when he was fourteen. He located in Pequaming where he lived with his uncle and aunt. He worked for the Hebard Lumber Co. He later married Flora King, and they also made their home in Pequaming. In 1900 they moved to Pelkie where Theodore built a very nice two-story home. One room on the first floor was set up for the first post office in this area. The establishment of a post office assured the train's stopping in Pelkie, thereby enabling the farmers to send their produce to nearby villages. The post office later was transferred to the country store which Alphonse Gauthier built next to Theodore's home. Theodore was characterized by his fondness for music and singing. He was good at both. He died on December 22, 1911. He had been ill for two years with tuberculosis, for which there was no cure at that time. He was buried the day before Christmas. I can still feel the sadness we felt when he was buried. It was bitter cold and stormy. A north wind blew and howled as we bid farewell to this courageous and kind man.
