William J. Snye, veteran Adirondack woodjobber and woodsman, died Friday afternoon, October 18, 1957, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson of Voorheesville near Albany, New York after a long illness, in his 84th year.
Born at Black Brook, New York on October 11, 1873, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Snye, he went to work at an early age. For many years he was engaged in the lumbering industry in one capacity or another. At the time of his marriage to Charlotte LaDuke of Black Brook, in the 1890's, he was employed as a woodjobber.
For about fourteen years Mr. Snye was an employee of Rockwell Kent at the latter's farm south of Au Sable Forks, New York, where he worked as a gardener in the summer months. Mr. Snye was a resident of Au Sable Forks twenty-one years and retired because of ill health from his employment on the Kent farm about 1952. He also worked for the J. & J. Rogers Company for a period of six or eight years.
He lived at Swastika for a number of years while woodjobbing. Fourteen years ago he moved to Au Sable Forks from Swastika, buying a home in the Jersey section.
Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, David Snye of Hudson Falls, Harvey, Russell and Irving Snye of Albany, three daughters, Mrs. Rita Boveia of Lake Placid, Mrs. Ruth Mihill of Pottersville and Mrs. George Johnson of Vorheesville, eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The remains were brought from Voorheesville in Quirk's ambulance to the Quirk Funeral Parlors in Au Sable Forks Friday evening.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning in Holy Name church. Rev. Father Ralph A. Hoffman said the mass of requiem. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bearers were Wilfred and Chester Duprey, Harold Charbonneau, Joseph Carmel, Nelson Betters, Emmett Fagan. Father Hoffman said prayers at the grave.
