Lifelong Alaskan Josephine Demientieff, 81, died June 10 at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Cathedral. Pallbearers include Clarence Gamache, Joseph Gamache, Kos Harrison, Mike Huhndorf, Robert Ronholdt and Jack Ronholdt. Burial will follow at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a Rosary at 4 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown.
Mrs. Demientieff was born March 26, 1912, in Georgetown. She grew up in Crooked Creek and attended school in McGrath and Bethel. She then moved to Napaimute where she owned a roadhouse and worked at a local store.
In the 1940s, she worked for Peterson Air and Northern Consolidated Airlines in Anchorage and Fairbanks, sewing seat covers, engine covers, wing covers and fabricating airplane wings. In the 1950s, she and her husband, Mike, moved to Kenai and homesteaded and commercial fished for more than 20 years. In the early 1970s, they moved to Galena and subsistence fished and trapped. They then moved to Reindeer Lake before settling in Flat where Mrs. Demientieff served as a U.S. postmaster many years until retiring. In the mid- 1980s, they moved to Holy Cross until she became ill and was sent to Anchorage for hospitalization in 1989.
Her family said: "She was a fun-loving and expressive woman who was never at a loss for words. She loved to tell stories and spoke often of her life experiences in the Yukon and Kuskokwim areas, of homesteading on the Kenai Peninsula, and of the days working at Peterson Air and Northern Consolidated Airlines."
Mrs. Demientieff was predeceased by her husband, Mike. She is survived by her brother, Sam Parent; sisters, Angelline Gamache and Agnes Harrison, all of Anchorage, and her sister, Annie Bailey of Tacoma, Wash. She was also "Aunty Jo" to many nieces and nephews.
