Edmund J. Carmody 80, of Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush, formerly of Cobleskill, died Friday March 16th at Albany Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Carmody was born January 15, 1932 in Utica NY, a son of Edmund J. and Bessie (Eddy) Carmody, Sr. He was a 1949 graduate of New Hartford High School and later, received his bachelor's degree in education from Utica College of Syracuse University and his master's degree from the University of Albany. He began his teaching career with the former Richmondville High School teaching social studies and later, Sharon Springs High School before joining the former Cobleskill High School where he taught until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 1376 in New Hartford and the Knights of Columbus in Utica and the NYS Retired Teachers Association. Ed served his country in the US Army in the infantry until his honorable discharge in September, 1952. He married Carol E. (Gamache) Carmody on August 31, 1957. She predeceased him on August 28, 1988.
Survivors include three children Michael E. (Roberta) Carmody of Loudonville, Karen E. (William) Cornelius of Wilton and Elizabeth A. (Michael) McHale of Clifton Park, five grandchildren David and Kevin Carmody, Jillian Cornelius, Zachary and Marielle McHale. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Elizabeth Cornelius, an infant son Kevin, and one brother Eugene. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday March 19th at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel Street Cobleskill where a visitation period will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will be in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Carmody to the Elizabeth T. Cornelius Foundation, 60 Railroad Place Suite 205, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
