Elsie B. Winchell of Windsor, 97, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Wilson Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Elsie was born on December 8, 1915 to the late Ashton and Ellen (Cable) Meeker.
She was also predeceased by her husband of 62 years Claude Winchell, December 21, 1997; son, Carl and his wife Geraldine; a brother, Merritt and a sister, Lois.
The loving family that survives her are son, Alan and his wife, Alison; grandchildren Lawrence, Judy, Susan, Jeffrey, Kathi and Steven; also great grandchildren Aaron, Brandy, Dylan, Nicholas, Matthew, Megan and Paige.
While raising her two sons, Alan and Carl, Elsie became a partner in a beauty shop in Binghamton. During this time she was asked to serve on the NY State Commission to set minimum wage standards for beauticians. Her performance on the commission led to recommendations for a teaching position at Binghamton Central High School where she taught cosmetology for 13 years (1948-1961). She was then recommended for a position at BOCES where she taught for another 19 years (1961-1980). Elsie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher and friend to all who knew her; she will be dearly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home 737 Chenango St. Port Dickinson, NY 13901, with her nephew, Rev. Ronald Winchell officiating.
Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Windsor, NY.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, August 19, 2013 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Those wishing may consider memorial contributions in Elsie's name to the Triple Cities Cosmetology Assoc., 63 Fuller Rd. Binghamton, NY 13901.
