Anna Racette
Appleton - Anna Racette passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 8 just as she had hoped: in her own home and with her mind intact. Anna was the last of six siblings and fondly reminded everyone of her age: 90. She is survived by her son, daughter, grandson, and three great-grandchildren.
Born in 1930 in Munich, Germany, during WWII Anna would flee the city with her family to rural Westerham. At eighteen Anna and U.S. Airman Thomas E. Racette fell in love. Separated by Tom's service in the Korean War, Anna and their son would join Tom only after he had been assigned to Rantoul AFB, Illinois. Even though Anna was the only sibling to leave Germany, she always maintained close contact with her family, which allowed her children and grandchild to know their German family as well. Until her death, Anna spoke fluent English and German.
As a loving wife and mother, Anna saw to it that her family settled easily into each new home, from Illinois, to England, France, North Dakota, Massachusetts, and then Appleton. For additional satisfaction, she also worked part-time jobs, as a BX customer service representative on Toul Rosieres AFB and Minot AFB, a nurse's assistant for Outagamie County, and a volunteer gift store clerk for Appleton Medical Center.
Although Anna will be remembered for her proud, meticulous nature, throughout her life friends and family enjoyed her delicious cooking, fun parties, and generous gift-giving. Most of all, Anna loved Tom. When he passed away last year, her heart broke. Although she tried to live without him, she just wanted to join him.
Family and friends of Anna are invited to a service at the Highland Memorial Cemetery on Richmond Street in Appleton on Friday July 9 at 11:00 a.m.
