Atlas, widely known retired Niagara Falls clothing merchant and longtime leader in civic, political, religious and fraternal affairs here, died in the Buffalo General Hospital yesterday afternoon. He had removed from this city to Buffalo six months ago and had been in the hospital for a month. He was 70 years old. A native of Russia, Mr. Atlas came to Niagara Falls in 1892 and conducted a men's clothing business here until forced into retirement by illness about a year ago. He was active in Republican politics for years and on several occasions contested primary elections for nomination as councilman and supervisor. He formerly served the city as a member of the Advisory Board of Harbor commissioners. Mr. Atlas was one of the founders of Temple Beth Israel and first president of the congregation. He was long active in philanthropic work. He had been a member of Niagara Falls Lodge No. 346, B.P. O. Elks many years and at the time of his death was a life member of the lodge and its inner guard. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias. He is survived by seven sons, Marvin, of Buffalo; Cyrus and Harold, of Hamburg, N.Y.; Vernon and Emmanuel, corporals in the U.S. Army, the former stationed at Tarrant Field, Forth Worth, Texas, and the latter at Camp Lee, Va., and Robert and Benjamin in Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Estelle Cohen and Mrs. Betty Ruth Serkernek, both of Buffalo; a brother, Rabbi Jacob Atlas, of Buffalo; two sisters, Mrs. A. Sull, of Buffalo, and Mrs. Dora Shapiro, of this city, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Gridley funeral home this afternoon, with Rabbi Simon Shoop and Rabbi Morton J. Cohn officiating. Interment was made in Beth Israel cemetery.
