Doris A. Desroches
- - Our beloved mother, Doris Ann (Hebert) Desroches passed away peacefully at the UVM Medical Center on Sunday, September 30, 2018. Doris was born on July 22, 1928 in Burlington to the late Alick and Eugenie (Potvin) Hebert.
Doris was married in St. Joseph's Church (now Cathedral), Burlington, on December 30, 1950 to E. Laurence (Larry) Desroches her best friend and the love of her life. They were married twenty-eight years until he passed away suddenly in January 1979.
She leaves her children, Susan Gamache (Richard) of Burlington, Karen Abbott (Nino) of Milton and Robert Desroches (Rhea Longe) of Vergennes; her grandsons, Christopher Gamache and Brian Gamache (Jessica Davitt); her granddaughters, Laura Abbott and Emily Abbott; her great-granddaughter, Samantha Gamache; her sisters, Ruth Boivin (Larry) and Alice Rondeau (Bernard) of Newport; her sisters-in-law, Judith Hebert (Peter) and Theresa Cross (Reginald); a brother-in-law, Kenneth Desroches; a special niece, Judy Thomas (Dan Hunt) with whom she wintered in Florida for many years, plus several other nieces and nephews. Her eldest son, James L. Desroches, passed away on September 27, 2018. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Paul and Peter Hebert; her sister, Sr. Helen Hebert, RHSJ and her sister-in-law Loretta Pickel.
After her husband Larry's death, she worked at IBM, then retired after 10 years. Doris was a talented woman who excelled at all sorts of crafts whether it be chair caning, making wooden furniture (yes, she knew how to use a Shopsmith), quilting, sewing, knitting, embroidery or cross-stitch . After her retirement she began making beautiful quilts, many hand quilted, and other sewn items to sell at craft fairs and holiday bazaars. She was delighted when repeat customers came looking for her booth year after year.
Doris loved to travel anywhere at any time whether it be a day trip around Vermont or an overseas trip to Japan or Europe. Another favorite pastime was eating out. She was a much loved regular at the Dutch Mill Family Restaurant in Shelburne where she would be happily greeted as "Ma" whenever she walked through the door.
Above all she was a devout Catholic who loved her faith and lived it daily, attending daily Mass whenever she could. She loved her family very much and looked forward to spending as much time with them as their lives would allow. She loved especially spending time with her children, grandchildren and sisters whether one on one or in family gatherings. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, October 3, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Boucher & Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 4 at noon in St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 289 Flynn Ave., Burlington. Interment will take place at a later date.
