SERVICES: Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home of Virginia. The Rev. Suzanne Wasilczuk will officiate. Burial will be at the Idington Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Minerva Wellomo Balke, 86 of Virginia, passed away Sept. 18, 2009, at St. Mary?s Hospital in Duluth. Minerva was born on April 21, 1923, to Charles and Mary (Jarvinen) Koski in Idington, Minn.
She grew up and attended school in Idington, Cook and graduated from Alango High School. She attended Virginia Junior College. She went to California during World War II where she worked for North American Aviation.
She married Mervin A. Balke, Sept. 7, 1946, at Metsala near Cook.
Following the marriage they made their home in Idington, later moving to Virginia. She was a member of Mesabi Unitarian Universalist Society. She had been a past officer in the Senior Federation.
She enjoyed traveling and made four trips to Finland with her cousin Sylvia Hauser. She also enjoyed gardening and berry picking.
She is survived by two sons, Gregory (Karen) Balke of Golden Valley, Minn., Keith Balke of Idington; two daughters, Merline (Stephen) Menart of Hutter, Minn. and Maxine Poldoski of Carlton, Minn.; grandchildren, Katie Balke, Andrea Knapp, Ian Balke, Elizabeth Balke, Melody Balke, Lora Poldoski, Leah Poldoski and Martin Menart; great-grandchildren, Mataya Pavlich and Addison Knapp; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents; two grandchildren, Nyangu Kawamba and Carmen Odella; son-in-law, Dennis Poldoski, two brothers Ernest and Leo Koski; two sisters, Lorna Koski and Elna Metsa.
