CHESTERTOWN ? Rita L. Ethier, 81, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 6, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born May 11, 1931, in Lacolle, Quebec, Canada, she was the eldest of five children of the late Harold and Antonia (Gamache) Duquette.
She married Andre Ethier in 1953, in Lacolle, Quebec, Canada. Although unable to speak English, Rita immigrated with her husband, Andre, to the United States in 1955. They lived in Champlain and Chazy before settling in the Chestertown area.
She worked at Glens Falls Hospital in the pharmacy department until her retirement.
Rita was predeceased by her husband, Andre Ethier; grandson, Jeffrey Ethier; brother, Jerry Duquette; and her sister, Jean Sharkey.
She is survived by her son, Michael Ethier and his companion, Sylvie Gamache, of St Paul Ile Aux Noix, Quebec, Canada; her daughters, Linda (Dave) Wade of Chestertown, and Brenda (Mark) Carpenter of the Adirondacks; her grandchildren, Lisa (Alex Langlois) Ethier, Erick Ethier, Andre Wade, Ryan Wade, Sarah (Tim) Latchford, Sean Carpenter and Kelsey Carpenter; her great-grandchildren, Felyx-Luc Langlois, Charlotte Langlois, Annabelle Ethier and Bianca Ethier; her sisters, Doris (Benoit) Dumouchel of St. Paul, Ile Aux Noix, Quebec, Canada, and Aline Duquette of Lachute, Quebec, Canada; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Rita loved her family deeply including her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as their Memere.
She will always be remembered for her easygoing and affectionate personality and her warm hospitality.
No one ever left her home hungry.
Rita loved the outdoors, gardening and spending winters in Florida.
According to her wishes, there will not be any calling hours. There will be a small family memorial service at a later time.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Barton-McDermott Funeral Home Inc., 9 Pine St., Chestertown.
