  [S5] Obituary. RICHARD GAMACHE OBITUARY Saugerties ? Richard Marleau Gamache died unexpectedly following a stroke, and peacefully, while surrounded by family Monday, August 29, 2022 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He was 66 years old. Born in Utica, NY on December 29, 1955, he was the son of the late Harlan Norman Gamache and the late Ruth Ann Marleau Gamache. At 13, he moved to Daytona Beach, FL and attended Mainland High School. He was a resident of Saugerties, NY since the early 1990s.A self-taught artist, Richard worked in many genres including oil paintings, illustrations, and caricatures. He was well-known for the representational quality and expressive character of his work, having displayed it throughout the Hudson Valley and Florida. In the 1990s he worked at Not Fade Away Graphics in Kingston, NY, where he designed promotional materials for 1960s rock bands including The Beatles, Grateful Dead, The Band, and The Rolling Stones. There, Mick Jagger personally selected one of Richard?s designs for use on tour. Richard resisted the mainstream obsession with abstract expressionism in favor of traditional figurative art. He worked on commissions until he retired, and continued to make art for his friends and family. He and his twin brother Andrew collaborated on many projects, including sculptures, children?s books, and an edgy, satirical animation project called ?An Evening with the Joneses? that has been over 20 years in the making.A beloved and distinctive member of the Saugerties community, he was known to frequent many local establishments, engaging in long conversations about art, music, sports, and politics with people from all walks of life, or enjoying karaoke as an observer. A globetrotter, he traveled across Europe many times. He had, and still has, many friends who were profoundly affected by his wisdom, his kindness, and his charming sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.In addition to his twin brother Andrew Gamache of Saugerties, he is survived by another brother Dale Gamache and his wife Robin of Holly Hill, FL; two sisters Victoria Rose Babcock and her husband Kerry of Port Orange, FL, and Debra Willis and her husband Lynn of St. Augustine, FL; several nephews Keenan Babcock, Matthew and Nathan Willis; two nieces Erin Gamache and Braille Babcock, who is also Richard?s goddaughter; and many cousins.A memorial and retrospective art exhibit will be held Sunday, October 16, 2022 at the JJ Newberry Building, 236 Main Street, Saugerties, NY.
