LEWISTON ? Alberta Phyllis Goddard Purinton, formerly of Day Road, Durham, passed away Saturday, July 3, at Marshwood Health Care Facility.
She was born in Lisbon Falls, Aug. 18, 1922, the daughter of William Benson Goddard and Ella Croteau Goddard. She attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Durham and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School, Class of 1940.
On Jan. 20, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Norman Allan Purinton and together they raised four children in the home that he built next to the family dairy farm in Durham, where she grew up. For many years, she was a homemaker, spending her time gardening, sewing, knitting, canning, cooking and being a loving mother and wife.
After their children were grown, Alberta worked as an alterations clerk at L.L. Bean in Freeport, until her retirement in the early 90s. She was a member of Lisbon United Methodist Church as well as a longtime member of the Solid Rock Grange in Durham. Some of her favorite pastimes were reading, watching and feeding birds. Alberta was also an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan. Most of all she loved the special family times and gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted wife and proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be missed.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Norman Purinton of Schooner Estates in Auburn; their children, Carl Purinton and his wife, Linda, of West Barnstable, Mass., Lewis Purinton and his wife, Karen, of Somerville, Beth Gamache and her husband, Jack, of Lisbon Falls and Allan Purinton and his wife, Debby, of Durham; eight grandchildren, Jenny (and Jeff) Pooler of Avon, Conn., Russell (and Marcie) Purinton of Maceinge, Pa., Kyle Purinton of Portland, Lisa Purinton of South Portland, Loni and (Larry) Knoedler of Bowdoin, Derek Gamache of Lisbon Falls, Heather (and Michael) Perry of Durham and Nathan (and Ashley) Purinton, USCG, Miami, Fla.; a special nephew, David W. Newton and his wife, Mary, of Winchester, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Andy, Megan and Matthew, Jonathan and Jordan, Trevor, Jessica, Kaitlin, Nicole and Gabe.
She was predeceased by her sister, Leola Goddard Newton.
