Swampscott - Mr. Robert M. Torrey, 86 years, of Swampscott, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Sally (Karr) Torrey.
He was born in Marblehead, the son of the late Stephen and Doris (Bray) Torrey. He was raised in Swampscott and was a graduate of Swampscott High School. He also attended Northeastern University. He has lived in Swampscott most of his life.
He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He served as a Corporal in Korea with the 1290 Headquarters Company and the Headquarters and Service Company 822nd Engineer Aviation Battalion.
Mr. Torrey was a member of the Church of the Holy Name in Swampscott. He served church on many levels. He was on the Church of the Holy Name Choir, Altar Guild, the Vestry Committee and as the Church Historian. Mr. Torrey held many church offices and held them multiple times. He was a Swampscott Town Meeting member. He was the former Chairman of the Shaw Estate and organized many 4th of July Parade as well as family reunions. He enjoyed to travel. He was a member of the Greater Boston American Legion. Mr. Torrey loved his family most of all.
He was employed with Filene's Department Stores for 53 years retiring in 2000. He worked at the Peabody, Chestnut Hill, Manchester, NH and Boston Stores.
Mr. Torrey is survived by his loving family, a son, Bruce M. Torrey and his wife Beth of Winchester; two daughters, Diane Gamache and her husband Normand of Center Conway, NH and Kristin Beliveau and her husband James of Lynn. His grandchildren, Tori Beliveau and her fiance, Andrew Guido, Ryan Beliveau and his fiancee, Christina Cipriani, Katie, Robert and Andrew Torrey, Justin Gamache, his step grandchildren, Brendan Gamache and his wife Tina, Nicholas Gamache and his wife, Hanna; his step great-grandchildren, Henry and Amy Gamache and his great-grandchild, Mason Beliveau. He also leaves a sister Barbara Gaillardet of Beverly and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Stephen, Charles and Richard Torrey.
His funeral will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 9 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street (Rte 1A), Lynn, followed by Services in Church of the Holy Name, 60 Monument Avenue, Swampscott at 10 a.m. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family prefers donations be made to Church of the Holy Name, 40 Hardy Road, Swampscott, MA 01907.
