  Born: Avis was born at the "Poor House" near Sedan, county seat of Chautauqua County, Kansas. At the time she was born her father, Charles S. Veal, was superintendent of the County Farm and her mother Mary Oler Veal, managed all the cooking and housekeeping. They left there when Avis was 4 years old.
