Joseph Michael (?Mike?) Burchell, born in Ingersoll, Ontario October 11th, 1938 made his final ?take off? from YOW on March 20th, 2023, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter Wendy Saunders (Stephen), grandchildren Mackenzie & Alexa Gamache, Robin & Sonia Saunders, brother Robert Burchell (nieces Paige, Bronwyn and Carlyn) and sister Kate Kirkpatrick (David) (niece Jenny). He is predeceased by his son Glen and brother Phil (Bev) (nieces Shelley, Heather and Pauline).
Mike left home at 17 to train and work as a radar technician in Wiarton, where he also learned to fly small airplanes. He worked as a radio / radar operator and flight controller in northern Ontario. He graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He travelled to many countries during his 39 years as a statistician for Federal Aviation Statistics. He was an avid airplane enthusiast, astronomer, member of the Stittsville gun club, downhill skier, genealogist and Ham radio operator (with friends around the world). He loved classical music, Leonard Cohen, spending his weekends and holidays at Palmerston Lake, travelling with friends to the Caribbean and spending summer holidays with Mackenzie and Alexa. He was a strong supporter of animal rescue and adopted numerous stray cats. He will be fondly remembered by his friends and family as a gentle, intelligent, kind, and extremely optimistic human who always had a spark in his eye.
Family and friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home Walkley Chapel, 1255 Walkley Road, Ottawa, 343-308-2871 on Saturday, April 1st. A Memorial Service will take place in the chapel at 12:00 noon.
