JENNIE MENART RAUH
Beloved mother of Joseph (Mary), Susan Znameroski and Mary Jane (Neil) Kunycky. Jennie was peacefully led by the angels and guided by husband Joseph Sr., mother Johanna, father John, brothers John and Louis, son-in-law Michael Znameroski, beloved cat Buddy, and many other friends and relatives joyously awaiting her arrival at the most holy place, the City of Light, her true "home".
Jennie, 95 years young, was loved by everyone who knew her. With a kind smile on her face, a big heart and a spirit of hospitality, she reached out to others and was surrounded by love in return. When Jennie's future husband, Joe, entered the Army Air Corps during World War II, he wished for his love to remain on the farm outside of Gilbert, MN, awaiting his return. Jennie, however, had her own ideas and she and three girlfriends entered the military. Jennie enlisted in the Marine Corps and worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., progressing to the rank of Sergeant. She and Joe were married while both were in the service. Once discharged, they eventually moved back to the Iron Range town of Gilbert to build their life together and raise their family.
Jennie was an amazing lady and always busy - cooking, mowing the grass, changing storm windows, shoveling snow, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, picking berries, canning fruits, vegetables and meats. She enjoyed making her own soup noodles, and baking her famous apple strudel, walnut potica, and her "mile-high" sponge cake with powder sugar drizzle for special celebrations. She was an avid reader, often walking to the park to sit on a bench under a shady tree to read. She loved animals of all forms and they lovingly snuggled with her in return. She always enjoyed talking to her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She often shared her love by sending beautifully hand written letters. At the urging of sister-in-law Edna, Jennie took driver's training and passed her driver's license test at age 65.
Jennie loved her family and was especially proud of her 7 grandchildren - Steven Rauh, Stacy Harter (Luke), Elizabeth Znameroski (Felicia Ortiz), David Znameroski (Nicole Cooper), Christina Kunycky, Brianna Kunycky and Alexander Kunycky. When her great granddaughter Emily was born in January 2011, Jennie was thrilled. Jennie anxiously awaited Emily's many visits and the two shared a very special bond. Jennie is also survived by daughter-in-law Mary Rauh, whom Jennie loved as another daughter. Mary was Jennie's dearest friend and confidant after Jennie moved from Northern Minnesota to Stewartville in 1996.
Jennie will be buried with full Military Honors at Fort Snelling Cemetery on Monday, April 30, with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville handling the arrangements (www.griffin-gray.com). In lieu of flowers, Jennie wished that memorials in her name be made to either the Stewartville or Gilbert Public Libraries.
