  Warren Gerds/Critic at Large: ?Maid to Marry? opens this week in Sturgeon Bay Warren Gerds, Critic At Large 05/11/2015 03:15 PM05/11/2015 03:19 PM Pergolesi: A comic opera by important 18th century creator Pergolesi is the source for the Stage Door Theatre Company?s new ?Maid to Marry.? GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) ? James Valcq of Stage Door Theatre Company in Sturgeon Bay is reaching wwwaaayyy back to bring au:diences a new romantic comedy with music. The source material for ?Maid to Marry? is from 1733 ? Pergolesi?s comic opera ?La Serva Padrona.? Performances start Wednesday, May 13, with a ?pay what you can? preview. Regular performances start Thursday, May 14, and continue through May 31 in the 84-seat Studio Theatre of Third Avenue Playhouse. Info: www.thirdavenueplayhouse.com. Valcq is co-artistic director of the company. As a composer, his wide range of work includes ?The Spitfire Grill,? which has had more than 500 productions, and ?Victory Farm? for Northern Sky Theater. According to a press release: The roots of ?Maid to Marry? lie in the tradition of commedia dell?arte, the forerunner of today?s sketch comedy and sitcoms that place familiar characters in farcical and improbable situations. In Valcq?s adaptation, the inspirations include such sitcoms as ?I Love Lucy,? romantic comedies like ?Pillow Talk? and the ultra-stylish yet misogynistic world epitomized by ?Mad Men.? Valcq is directing. He says, ?In staging the piece, I plan on leaving no comic stone unturned. This is a show I?ve long waited to bring to TAP. We really haven?t done an out-and-out zany comedy since ?The 39 Steps? a couple of seasons ago, so the time seems ripe.? The cast includes newcomer Kaleigh Rae Gamaché as Serena. The Milwaukee-based performer has appeared with Skylight Music Theatre and Milwaukee Opera Theatre. Upcoming for her in July is performing in the Thailand premiere of ?The Snow Dragon? with Bangkok Opera/Opera Siam. As Hubert, Luke MacMillan returns to Stage Door Theatre Company after his appearance in last summer?s ?The Fantasticks.? Local actor/musician Craig McClelland appears as Curley. His previous Stage Door credits include ?Tapestries? and the reading of ?The Diary of Anne Frank.? The sets, costumes and props for ?Maid to Marry? will be of 1950s kitsch with newly created pieces to evoke the ?atomic? look of the decade. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, known chiefly only by his last name, was a prolific composer, along with being a violinist and organist. He is credited as being among the most important early composers of opera buffa. He died at age 26 of tuberculosis.
