9713	WEST WARWICK - Alice Leroux, 77, of 62 Robert St., a former Democratic State Committeewoman, died yesterday at home. She was the widow of Clement Loroux. A lifelong West Warwick resident, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Delphine (Verville) Gamache. Mrs. Leroux was a member of the Union of Prayer and St. Anne's Sodality, both of St. John's Church, Arctic. She was also a member of the West Warwick Tenants Association and the West Warwick Senior Citizens Association. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Emilie Young of Cranston. The funeral will be held Saturday at 8 :15 a.m. from the R. Potvin & Son Funeral Home, 45 Curson St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Washington Street, at 9. 9716	What In The Hell Was Up With Jason Gamache? Patricia Platt Patricia Platt Updated November 16, 2017 13 items The Jason Gamache case was shocking to the small community of Courtenay, British Columbia. What did Jason Gamache do, you ask? On an otherwise normal October afternoon in 1992, the 15-year-old kidnapped and then brutally raped and murdered his six-year-old neighbor Dawn Shaw. News soon surfaced that Gamache had been previously convicted of sexually assaulting children. The Jason Gamache crimes left the community baffled. Residents began asking themselves, "Who was Jason Gamache?" He had been well liked in his community and no on knew of his dark history before he arrived in Courtenay. Shaw's family trusted Gamache and believed he deeply cared for their daughter. Sadly, the lack of knowledge about Gamache's history led to a brutal, unforgettable crime. There is not a lot of public information on the crimes Gamache committed or the details of Shaw's brutal murder, and some of this may be conjecture. Still, there is no denying what an awful crime Gamache committed - a teenager killing a child - and the scar it left on this small British Columbia town. Jason Gamache was friendly with children and appeared to genuinely enjoy their company. He ended up kidnapping Dawn by tricking her into playing hide and seek with him and a group of neighborhood children. Gamache carried Dawn into the woods during the game, perhaps under the guise they would find a hiding spot together. He went on to rape and murder her in the secluded woods. When Dawn?s body was discovered, it had been absolutely brutalized by Gamache. Several of her ribs were broken, she had severe blows to her thorax and abdomen, and her liver was perforated. It was concluded that she bled out as a result of her wounds, which ultimately caused her death. Gamache lived in the same townhouse complex as Dawn Shaw. He was, by all accounts, well liked and trusted by other residents. In fact, the man who discovered Dawn?s body trusted Gamache to babysit his two sons the night of Dawn's murder. The man was later shocked and stated it never even occurred to him Gamache could be the murderer. Gamache had previously been convicted of sexually assaulting two four-year-old children in the city where he previously lived with his mother. To escape the public stigma, the family moved the family from Namaimo to Courteny, British Columbia. Gamache was attending court ordered sexual assault therapy at the time of the murder. In Canada, there were no laws at the time requiring that those convicted of sexual assault be documented. When Gamache and his mother moved to town, no one had any idea of his history. To neighbors and classmates, Gamache was an average 15-year-old boy. They had no reason to suspect he may harbor violent tendencies. Gamache left his mark on the crime scene in the form of a footprint. When stomping Dawn to death, he left the imprint of his shoe on her face and the ground. This was part of the evidence police used to eventually convict Gamache. In 1997, Jason Gamache died via asphyxiation when he hung himself in his jail cell. His body was found around 10:30 at night by guards during routine inmate counts. He was 20 years old at the time of his death. Carol Shaw wanted closure after the death of her daughter. She sent Gamache a video in prison in which she explained how his actions affected her, her husband, and her surviving children. Gamache eventually sent a video of his own back, but the contents were never made public. We can only hope Dawn's mother gleaned even a small amount of closure from what was surely a deeply upsetting video response. A highly disturbing videotape of Gamache confessing was shown as evidence in court. Gamache gave police a walk through of his crime, in which he led them across the school grounds and explained how he raped and murdered Dawn. In a particularly disturbing detail, Gamache admitted he stomped Dawn to death because he heard her 10-year-old brother calling for her. He killed her to keep her quiet after she called out, ?Mommy.? Even more unsettling was the fact Dawn?s family viewed the tape in court. They walked out before the video was finished and tried to warn other family members about what happened. They knew the clip would be shown on the news, as the case was highly publicized. Unfortunately, the news had already aired pieces of the tape before the Shaws could warn relatives. Gamache did not seem all there during his confession. He expressed a lot of affection towards Dawn and seemed devastated about her murder. At the same time, when explaining the details of his murder to the police, he seemed strangely detached. This led forensic psychiatrists to diagnose Gamache with multiple personality disorder, now known as dissociative identify disorder. He blamed his actions on a personality he called "Karl." The diagnosis, however, did not prevent him from being charged with the crime. In 1990, Gamache found one of his father?s porn tapes and watched it. The tape featured oral sex, which Gamache had never encountered before. Perhaps inspired by the tape, he later attempted to force two children to perform fellatio on him. Jason Gamache did not have an easy time growing up. When he was two, his parents went through a bitter divorce. At six, his father managed to temporarily gain custody of Gamache. Apparently, Gamache?s father was highly disciplinary and living with him may have been traumatizing for Gamache. There are hundreds of thousands of children who are caught in the middle of awful divorces and manage not to rape or murder a child, but it does give us some insight as to what events may have shaped his dark personality. Part of what made the murder so shocking was the fact Gamache was such a well-liked young man. Neighbors reported Gamache was kind and well-mannered. He also did well in school and was captain of the rugby team. This made his horrific crime all the more shocking. She married Russell Waters after World War I. They raised two daughters, Madeleine and Joan. Later they moved to Oakland Maine where they became antique dealers. Wettach, age 91, passed away on August 22, 2021 at Community Hospice, Baptist South Medical Center. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 27, 1929. Bill attended Shaler High School, Pittsburgh and graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering. After graduating from college, he served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the bronze star. Upon his return from Korea, Bill began his professional career with the Pennsylvania Railroad as a junior civil engineer and worked for the railway system for 39 years, ending his career with the New Jersey Transit Authority as Assistant Vice President. He and his wife, Mary, retired to St. Augustine. In his spare time Bill enjoyed crafting and building beautiful furniture pieces but he was most proud of his extensive stamp collection, compiling over 100 professional quality albums. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary M. Wettach. He is survived by his children, Mary Cole (Glenn), St. Augustine, James Wettach (Lynn), St. Augustine, Ann Lukens (Howard), Atlanta, 6 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. St. Johns Family Funeral is in charge of the arrangements but due to present conditions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. 9729	William "SKI" Gowitzke, 90, passed away on June 4, 2014 at the Covenant Hospice Home at the West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, FL. He was born on November 13, 1923 in Manchester New Hampshire to William B. and Irene Morey Gowitzke. William "SKI" Gowitzke grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire. He graduated from Central High School in Manchester New Hampshire in 1941. After high school he joined the United States Navy in 1942 and served for 26 years. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and was the recipient of Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He retired in 1968, achieving the rank of Aviation Maintenance Administration Chief. After retirement he began work for Pensacola Cigar and Tobacco Company as the Warehouse Manager where he worked for 15 years after which he retired to spend all his time with the love of his life Lucille "Bunny" Gowitzke. William "SKI" Gowitzke married Lucille Jeanette Gamache in 1949 in Manchester, New Hampshire. They were happily married for 47 years. William "SKI" Gowitzke was a charter member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 557 for 41 years where he served in the highest position in each level of the Moose and achieved the distinction of having the title of "Pilgrim", bestowed on him, which is the highest order in the Moose. He attended Saint Anne's Catholic Church of Bellview. He enjoyed working in his yard which was his pride and joy having the only Putting Green yard in Pensacola and was an avid bowler for many years and did not retired from bowling until February of 2014 at the young age of 90. He and his beloved wife were both Lieutenants in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps for 6 years volunteering to help young men prepare for their Naval careers. Survived by his wife Constance (nee Smith), the mother of his children. 9731	William ?Bill? Toivonen, 101, a long-time Houghton resident, died July 24, 2017, at the Lighthouse-Hancock. He was born in Tapiola on November 18, 1915, son of Kasper and Elina (Walkkinen) Toivonen. He attended the John A. Doelle School through the 10th grade. He then attended Houghton High School, graduating with the Class of 1934. Together with his father starting in 1936, for five years they started furnishing cedar and hardwood, mine timbers for Copper Range and Isle Royale Copper Mines, plus railroad ties, pulpwood and sawmill logs. He then started purchasing stumpage and bought a sawmill, which he operated for three years. He then started logging for Consolidated Paper Company, Vulcan Sawmill and Northern Hardwoods. Bill retired in 1980, making it 44 years being self employed dealing with forest products. On September 2, 1961, he was married to the former Edith Pascoe at the Grace United Methodist Church in Houghton, which he also attended in the past. Bill really enjoyed the outdoors, walking in his timber land, hunting, fishing and gardening, especially flowers. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith; and two sisters, Helen Reichardt and Ruth Fields. Surviving are two nephews, Paul (Kristina) Fields and John (Linda) Fields; two nieces, Lois (Ralph) Bergstad and Linda Reichardt; a great-niece and a great-nephew. The family would like to thank Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly for their help and compassion given to Bill over the years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor Chuck Williams of Grace United Methodist Church, Houghton, to officiate. 9732	William A. Gamache 89, beloved husband of Marie Gamache, entered into eternal rest Saturday (Oct. 24) at his home. William was the son of the late Louis and Alice Brunell Gamache. William was born and raised in Enfield only leaving to serve in the Army during WWII. William was awarded two Bronze Star for his courageous service. Upon returning home William worked as an auto mechanic for over thirty years for the Troiano Company retiring in 1989.William will always be remembered for his caring spirit and his willingness to lend a helping hand. He is survived by his wife, Marie Gamache, and children; son Steven & his wife Shirley Gamache of Stafford Springs, daughter Robin and her husband James Gagnon of Windsor Locks, daughter Raven and her husband Edward Reid, Jr of Enfield. William's joy and light of his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren; Kerri Hall, Joel Gamache, Michael Gagnon, Michelle Gagnon, Dallas Reid, Ashley Reid, Dalton Gamache, Wade Gamache, Shayla Gamache, Karissa Mori, Landon Hall, and Chase Hall. He was born on October 2, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, to his loving parents Ameda Gamache and Lillian Eleanor (Gau) Gamache. William was raised in St. Louis, where he attended school and graduated from Wellston High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict before continuing his education at Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Following his graduation, William began his career working as an accountant right out of college. Over the years, he was employed by several companies before ultimately retiring from AT&T after many years of dedicated service. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and quiet dedication to providing for his family. Outside of his career, William found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid bowler who enjoyed both the competition and the camaraderie of the lanes. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and he remained deeply involved in his Lutheran church community, where he formed meaningful friendships and lived out his values through kindness and service. William met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Ditch, and on January 12, 1962, they were united in marriage in St. Louis, Missouri. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and devotion. He took great pride in his family, and raising them brought him immeasurable joy and countless cherished memories. William will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steady, caring presence in the lives of those who knew him. His legacy of faith, dedication, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. 9735	WILLIAM JACKSON ?JACK? TURNER III. Jack was born on Aug. 1, 1948. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather (Papa), uncle and friend who went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Dec. 19, 2024. Born in Cleveland, Tennessee, and raised in Orlando, Florida, by his parents Bill and Geneva Turner Jr. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Turner; daughters, Lori Turner Cassidy, Dawn Turner Gamache and her husband, Chris Gamache; and stepdaughter, Blair Gibbs, and her husband, Andrew Evans; and brothers Jim, Ken and Larry. Papa to three grandchildren. Jack is best known as a musician, singer and saxophone player who loved to praise the Lord with his music. Jack participated in several churches singing with his gospel quartet, Sonday Four, or playing his saxophone. In addition to his gospel quartet, Jack and his brother Larry formed a band known as Friday?s Knights in their early years and performed at weddings, Christmas parties, New Year Eve?s and Valentine dances until 2023. Alongside his brother Larry, he co-owned and operated the Remedy Shop, Mr. Postman and Turner Brothers Inc. dba Turner Drugs until their retirement in 2023. An avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering on the University of Florida Gators, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and most of all Orlando Magic. He was a season ticket holder for the Magic for many, many years and for the past few years became a fan-favorite usher known as the ?Dancing Usher? during hometown Magic games. 9736	William P. "Bill" Binder, age 77, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 21, 2020, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Bill was born on August 12, 1943, in Oshkosh, to Karl and Regina (Hemmer) Binder. Bill married Rosemarie Polakowski on November 11, 1995, and they recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Bill was employed by Morgan Door Company (later Jeld-Wen Windows & Doors) for 45 years. He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren, following the Packers and Brewers, watching his favorite crime dramas and taking trips to regional destinations including Mackinac Island and Door County, as well as going to area casinos. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and ice fishing with his brother Earl and his many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his father Karl; his mother Jean (Eichmann); his stepfather, John Eichmann; and his sister Carol (Rudy) Meyer. He was born April 10, 1922 in the Town of Greenbush, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Noordyk. He lived in Greenbush and Sheboygan with his parents until May of this year when his mother died.
