Steve was a teller of tall tales - most of which were rooted in his real life. Growing up as the oldest child in a large, loud, loving Catholic family provided ample cannon fodder to get him started: Who actually won the most recent one-legged butt kicking contest? Who actually stabbed his brother Brian's hand with a fork because he ate too slowly at dinner? Was it a cantaloupe that broke the window after his mother Joan threw it at Steve because his violin playing was so terrible?or was it a watermelon? Or was it a grapefruit? Familial affection and cross-country adventure followed Steve into adulthood. He completed two Bachelor's degrees (one in Science, the other in Business Administration) and a Master's degree in Science, then solo hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. Steve married Sue and together they created a family that values faith, creativity, and determined work ethic. Steve inherited his father Ed's Mr. Fix-It skills and sense of can-do, refusing to hire someone to do anything he could figure out how to do himself, and he coupled that with his generosity in time, refusing to let anyone he loved pay someone to do something he could do for them. He had a great love of music, encouraging his daughters Jen and Laura to pursue their skill, and was a visionary intellectual when it came to computer science, a trait he passed to his youngest son Jacob. Steve was also frugal, appropriately earning eyerolls from his wife Sue when he wore holes through his shoes and still refused to throw them out. He claimed they were "air conditioned." Steve was a man of deep faith, with a devotion to the Blessed Mother and to Christ in Eucharistic Adoration. The life of faith cultivated in his family made fertile ground for his oldest son Jim's vocation to the priesthood and for his own particular way of praying the rosary. Several years ago, Steve told his family he believed Mary wanted him to pray a new set of mysteries of the rosary - the Miraculous Mysteries - which his family has taken up. Steve will be remembered for all of his accomplishments, but those who knew him best recognized that he was most at home, most free, generous, and joyful while playing (usually loudly) with his grandchildren Simon and Felix. Born August 6, 1951 she was predeceased by her parents William and Margret Gamache. Kathy was an x-ray/mammography technician and worked at The Ohio State Medical Center for the past 12 years. She was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church and member of the Respect Life Group. She volunteered often with the parish and the National Hemophilia Foundation. She enjoyed helping those in need and spending time with her family. 8322	Student Killed in Car Crash BY CASSANDRA STEPHENSON Pepperdine junior Jake Brandon Harris died early Monday in San Pedro after his car crashed into a railing on the 110 Freeway and caught fire. The crash was reported around 2 a.m. Harris died at the scene, according to ABC7. Emergency crews did not find any passengers at the scene. The cause of the crash is unclear and an investigation is ongoing, according to the LAPD. No updates on the case have been released at this time. Pepperdine sophomore Kelly Champeau posted a tribute to Harris on Instagram Monday evening. ?Heaven was blessed with Jake Brandon Harris today,? the post reads. ?The good people really do die young. Our friend group will forever be altered and eternally grateful for your memories. I will do my best to honor your legacy by striving to act with your kind heart, positivity and accepting nature. I will always miss you, your jeep and your smile.? Champeau and sophomore Ally Enns, another close friend of Harris, wrote in a statement that Harris was the ?most kindhearted, selfless, loving person that we ever knew.? ?Jake took our problems on his shoulders, opened his heart to everyone and was constantly positive,? Champeau and Enns wrote. ?He welcomed everyone into his life without judgement. Despite his own life, he always put others first. To see Jake on campus or to be able to spend time with him was a blessing and gift that will be truly missed. The Pepperdine community will always miss Jake?s friendly smile. 8339	Summer sunlight fell in green-filtered shafts through the heavy branches, dappling the wet, brown teenage bodies. Laughing at their own horseplay, the clutch of tanned boys and girls fought good-naturedly for a place aboard a bobbing inner tube as it spun and drifted slowly on the river's current. Among them was the tube's owner, Jason Gamache, a handsome, rather lanky youth, his thick brown hair plastered against his head. Apart from his height, a strapping 6 feet, 1 inch, there was nothing--nothing visible, at least--on this August, 1992, day on Vancouver Island, to set the easygoing 15-year-old apart from his playmates. There most certainly was nothing to suggest that within weeks this same laughing boy would lure an unsuspecting younger child into darkened woods, rape and casually murder her. The strangling of six-year-old Dawn Shaw on October 24, 1992, in Courtenay, B.C., a community of 12,000 people 180 km northwest of Victoria, sent shock waves through British Columbia. Horror at the killing redoubled eight weeks later, when police arrested Gamache, Shaw's next-door neighbor in a townhouse complex, and charged him with the girl's murder. No one apart from investigators had suspected the personable youth of harboring a hidden impulse to lethal violence. Lloyd Doucet, another resident of the complex and the one who discovered Dawn's bruised and naked body, trusted Jason so completely that later that night he left the teen to babysit his own two young sons. ``It never dawned on me at all that it could be him,'' Doucet says now. But there was a side to young Jason that his neighbors knew nothing about--one that was, and may still be, a mystery to Jason Gamache himself. What the neighbors did not know was that the youth was already on probation for two previous minor sex offences. What no one knew, although police quickly began to suspect it, was that the polite young man, the captain of his high-school rugby team, was also brutally capable of murder. Physical evidence collected from the crime scene, however, pointed directly to Gamache. Confronted with that evidence eight weeks after the crime, the youth confessed. After nearly a year of assessment by court- appointed experts, Jason's case was raised to adult court last fall, and his name made public. On April 6, a B.C. Supreme Court jury in Victoria convicted him of Dawn's murder. He is now serving a life sentence. That sentence, however, hardly closes the case on Jason Gamache. 8345	Susan Sarah Laurie May 6, 1955 - March 11, 2025 Susan Sarah Laurie of Ahmeek, passed away on March 11, 2025, peacefully at her home with her family following a lengthy courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 6, 1955, in Laurium, to George and Margie (Allen) Biekkola and was raised in Mohawk. Susan graduated from Calumet High School, class of 1973. She met the love of her life, Thomas Laurie, and they married on Aug. 10, 1974. She worked as a waitress at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Slim?s Café, where she then became a co-owner with her husband, sister-in-law Alecia Gariepy and husband Jim for 20 years. She then worked at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Dollar General until retirement. She enjoyed snowmobiling, bowling, spending time with family and friends, and making lots of memories with Bry and Jazzy. Susan is preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; daughter Sarah Ann; in-laws Ted and Mabel Laurie; brother Richard Biekkola; sister-in-law Donna Nordstrom; two brothers-in-law Derrill and Scott Laurie; three nephews Jeremy Nordstrom, Jason and Joel Tuoriniemi; and best friend Geri Hall. 8347	Suzanne Baas Obituary BAAS Suzanne Willett Baas, age 73, passed away at her home on Thursday, December 29, 2011. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on February 20, 1938, the daughter of Captain Raymond and Bertha (Shirey) Willett. Growing up in a military home, Sue attended school in Pittsburgh, Norfolk, VA, and eventually graduated from high school in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she was named Miss Puerto Rico. After earning her Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts, she worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. It was there that she met her husband, Gary Baas. The two were married in February of 1959, and Sue worked as a private secretary to the German Consulate. Though she was successful in her work, she was most devoted to her family and friends. She enjoyed the company of her Euchre Group and Bridge Club, and she was active for many years at the Columbus Country Club, Athletic Club Bowling League, and Tennis Group. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church. Sue loved gardening, and she was an avid Ohio State Football fan. She was also very generous and had a passion for helping others, especially children and animals. She was a supporter of TWIG through Nationwide Children's Hospital, as well as the Capital Area Humane Society and Columbus Zoo. Sue was honest and fair, and she will be greatly missed by those who had the chance to know and love her. She is survived by her husband, Gary Baas; children, Jeffrey Baas, Lisa Baas, Heather Baas, and David Baas; brother, Colonel Frank (Remle) Willett; grandchildren, Courtney Baas, Jarrod Payne, and Audra Payne; nephew, Mark (Cyndi) Willett; great nephews, Raymond (Jessica) and Ryan Willett; and many close friends, including Jeff Reynolds, and special friend and caregiver, Holly Preece. 8349	Suzanne Miron Obituary Suzanne M. Miron, 81, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at home. Suzanne was born on April 30, 1943, to Brace and Eleanor (Braumandl) Getschow. On August 14, 1965, she was united in marriage to Thomas Miron. They spent the majority of their married life in Manitowoc and Menasha, Wisconsin. Suzanne's love for the Lord and the bible was evident in her life. She was active in Manitowoc?s Women?s Aglow, which strengthened her faith and gave her lifelong friends. Sue lived out her faith by volunteering and helping people. She has been volunteering for more than ten years at St Vincent de Paul in Kaukauna. Sue found great joy in developing friendships wherever she was. Suzanne's love for her family was unwavering.
