7715	Schroon Lake / Rochester, NY- James Walter Williford passed away Wednesday July 10, 2019 at age 90. He was predeceased by his parents, William Roy and Isabella (McCormick) Williford, son Douglas, brothers Bill, Bob, Roy, Tom and sister, Isabella Signorelli. Jim was born in the Bronx, NY and moved to Schroon Lake, NY 1932. He graduated from Schroon Lake Central School in 1947. Jim was a Boy Scout, loved fishing and hunting, skiing and boy scout camporees where he always cooked for his fellow scouts. Jim caddied at the local golf course and worked as a line cook at the Terrace Restaurant which led him to complete a 2-year apprenticeship at the Waldorf Astoria Culinary School where he worked as a saucier for a year. He moved back to Schroon Lake where he married the love of his life, Jean Frances Stowell. He was the Chairman of the Local Draft Board in Ticonderoga, and worked for the Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Co. Jim attended banking school at West Point and was particularly proud that he became an officer in the bank after one year and was given his own branch office in Schroon Lake. He retired from the bank after 20 years. Jim was Treasurer of the Schroon Lake C of C, two Cemetery Associations and the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club. He and Jean developed Metcalf Acres Camp ground on Schroon River which they operated for 20 years before selling and becoming snowbirds. Jim was a devoted student of the Civil War and spent time sharing his knowledge with the Schroon Lake school children. Jim and Jean moved to the Rochester area in 2009 for health reasons and to be closer to family. Jim is survived by his wife Jean, his daughter Denise Brown of Sterling Va. son Dr. Daniel (Jacqueline) Williford of Pittsford, NY, grandchildren Dr.Sara Williford (Dr. Matt Kennedy) of Bedford, MA, Andrew Bearce of Sterling, VA, Daniel Williford Esq. 7717	Scrapyard owner beaten to death MGNONGAHELA (AP) ? A customer of scrapyard owner Marvin Pirchesky found the man barely alive, savagely beaten with a large sledgehammer. The customer got help, and Pirchesky was flown to Pittsburgh hospital but died of severe head and chest injuries. Police had no suspects yesterday. ?We believe that robbery was a motive,? said Allegheny County homicide inspector Daniel Colaizzi. The customer found Pirchesky, 48, about 11 a.m. Saturday lying on the floor of Route 51 Iron and Metal Co. in Forward Township, about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. Pirchesky?s sister told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review her brother had been threatened and often carried several hundred dollars. Police found $7 on Pirchesky. 7738	September 21, 2011 Brother Armand L. Gamache, S.C. BURRILLVILLE- Brother Armand L. Gamache, S.C., (Brother John Damian), 86, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died September 20, 2011 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI. Born in Nashua, NH, he was the son of the late Lionel Gamache and Marie (Gingras) Gamache. Brother Armand entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1939 at Granby, Qubec, Canada. He pronounced his first vows in 1942 in Granby, Qubec, and his perpetual vows in 1948 at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI. Brother Armand was a professed religious for 69 years, serving in a variety of locations including Andover and Sharon, Massachusetts, Woonsocket, RI, Lewiston, Maine, and Nashua, NH, as a missionary in Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Africa, for 17 years, and in St. Albans, England for 19 years. Brother Armand served as a teacher for 50 years. He also provided auxiliary assistance in schools in data processing and printing. He had been a volunteer at the Steere Farm Elementary School in Burrillville, RI, for the past few years. Brother Armand was also an athlete, playing tennis and golf throughout his life. Brother Armand was recognized with a Normal School Diploma by the Quebec Education Department, with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Michaels College, Colchester, Vermont, and with a Master of Education degree from Rivier College in Nashua, NH, as well as qualifications from the University of South Africa. Brother Armand is survived by his sisters, Pearl Sciuto of Derry, NH, Irene Boucher of Nashua, NH, Pauline Lamb of Hudson, NH, and his brother, Robert, also of Nashua, NH. His brother, Fernand (Fudgy), and sister, Madeleine Gamache, preceded him in death. The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. 7749	Services were held for Paul G. Gamache Sr., 78, of N. 12th Court, who died Saturday at Hollywood Regional Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gamache was born in Cohoes. He lived in Cohoes and Waterford most of his life before moving to Hollywood two years ago. He worked in the construction industry in the Capital Region before retiring several years ago. He was a member of the Laborers Union Local 190 in Glenmont. Survivors include his wife, Violette Fortin Davidson Gamache; four sons, Paul G. Gamache Jr. of Brunswick, Maine, and Roger Gamache, Robert Gamache and George Gamache, all of Cohoes; a stepdaughter, Char Davidson of Watervliet; a stepson, Townsend "Tom" Davidson Jr. of Colonie; a sister, Lorraine Belleau of Hollywood; three brothers, Donald Gamache and Raymond Gamache, both of Hollywood, Fla., and Lawrence Gamache of Troy; one grandson and three great-grandchildren. 7750	SETTLEMENT AVERTS KEY TRIAL IN DEATHS TIED TO POLLUTION By FOX BUTTERFIELD, Special to the New York Times Published: September 23, 1986 BOSTON, Sept. 22— Eight families, who charged that water pollution by W. R. Grace & Company had resulted in the death from leukemia of five children and an adult, announced a settlement with the company today. Lawyers for each side refused to disclose the terms of the agreement except to say it was ''substantial.'' The announcement came as the second stage in a complex trial was to begin in Federal District Court here this morning. The trial had attracted widespread attention because of belief that a jury finding might have set a national precedent holding polluters responsible for the medical consequences of their action. Members of the eight families from Woburn, an industrial suburb, and a spokesman for Grace differed about the implications of the settlement. ''With the settlement,'' said Anne Zona, whose brother died of leukemia in 1974 at the age of 8, ''they are admitting to what they had done and paying for it.'' ''We made it unprofitable for companies to dump,'' said Kathryn Gamache, whose husband, Roland, died of leukemia while the trial was going on. ''They can no longer dump in the backyard and get away with it.'' Strain on Families Cited But a spokesman for Grace, in a prepared statement, reiterated the company's position that it was not responsible for the chemical contamination of the two wells in Woburn or the leukemia deaths. ''We continue to maintain and are now more convinced than ever that we did not pollute the wells and we were in no way responsible for the tragic events that affected our fellow residents in the Woburn community,'' the statement said. The statement said that Grace had decided to make the settlement only because of the enormous costs of the trial and the ''additional strain on the families.'' At the end of the first stage of the trial last July, attorneys for the two sides estimated it had already cost more than $2 million. The first stage was to determine whether Grace and another concern, Beatrice Foods, had contributed to the contamination. Beatrice was absolved of wrongdoing by the Federal jury, but Grace was charged with ''substantially'' polluting the wells with two chemicals, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, or TCE and PCE, both of them solvents. The two wells involved were drilled by Woburn in 1964 and taken out of service in 1979 after they were found to be polluted. Near the wells, Grace's Cryovac division makes food-packaging machines where the solvents were used to clean equipment. Grace contended that there were many other sources of contamination and Woburn had been advised in 1958 not to drill the wells in that area because the underground water was already contaminated. Original Verdict Overturned In the second stage of the trial the jury was to determine whether the chemicals caused the leukemia deaths, along with disorders of the heart and central nervous systems. If the jury had found a link between the chemicals and the diseases, a third trial would have been held to determine damages. The complex case was further confused this morning when Federal District Judge Walter Jay Skinner ruled in favor of an appeal by Grace and ordered that the first stage be held over again because of trial errors. He said the jury had confused crucial dates about when the pollution occurred. Judge Skinner took the blame, saying questions he had posed to the jury were not ''as clear as I should have made them.'' Michael B. Keating, a lawyer for Grace, said that the judge's ruling was an important factor in reaching the settlement. Jan R. Schlichtman, an attorney for the families, said it was only a ''technical issue.'' 'I'm Glad It's Over' The families in Woburn, 12 miles north of Boston, filed their suit in 1982, contending that the chemicals caused the leukemia deaths of five children and an adult and were responsible for leukemia in two other children. ''In one way I'm glad it's over with, but I'm sorry they didn't get nailed to the wall,'' said Mrs. Gamache. Lauren Aufiero, whose 3-year-old son Jarred died of leukemia in 1982, said: ''These children should not have died. But maybe they died for a cause. Maybe now they will spend a little more money on hauling away their waste instead of dumping it.'' Her husband, Richard, said, ''The anger will always be there, but in our opinion there was no other way to go.''
