  Died: Frederick Gamache Obituary WATERLOO - July 17, 1936 - February 13, 2026. Frederick J. "PopPop" Gamache, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, at his home, with his loving and supportive family by his side. There will be no public calling hours. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Center Street, Waterloo with full military honors. A private burial will take place immediately after. A luncheon will follow at Waterloo Fire Department, 39 E Water St., Waterloo, N.Y. Fred was born July 17, 1936, in Ogdensburg N.Y., the son of the late Frederick J. and Ardis (Avery) Gamache. He was a 1954 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and went on to attend Western Michigan University where he received his Bachelor's Degree after serving proudly in the Air Force from 1955-1959. Fred dedicated 32 years to the Social Security Administration. In retirement, he became well known and well loved as the "Mayor of Walmart," greeting customers for 16½ years. He also worked at the Seneca County Courthouse as an attendant for four years, and at Corning Glass (Revere) at the outlet mall for four years. A committed community volunteer, Fred gave 15 years of service to the Seneca County Senior Center and spent 10 years helping with Bingo at the Waterloo VFW, where he was a member. He was also a member of the Montezuma Seniors and NARFE. Fred enjoyed spending time in his machine shop and tinkering with vintage tractors, (hobbies that reflected his curiosity, craftsmanship, and love of hands-on work.) He is survived by his son, Darren (Denise) Gamache daughters, Kathleen (Khaley) McCollum-Diatta and Karen McCollum; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Jean Thayer. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Harriet, in 2017. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's memory be directed to the Pathway Home of the Finger Lakes, P.O. Box 516, Seneca Falls, N.Y. 13148.
