Elsie Marie Gamache (Litzenberg) of Yakima, Washington passed away peacefully Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Summitview Health Center. She was born on September 27, 1918 to the late Alex and Anna (Gettman) Litzenberg, Sr. in Portland, Oregon. The family moved to the Yakima Valley in 1919 and Elsie grew up on their farm in Wapato, Washington. She attended Ashue Grade School and graduated from Wapato High School. She met Amos Gamache in 1938 at a dance and they were married three years later on January 30, 1941 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Wapato. They were blessed in a devoted marriage for fifty-seven years. They made their first home on a hop farm west of Toppenish on the Fort Road. Elsie worked with Amos in all phases of their hop farm. In 1954 they moved with their family to Yakima while continuing to operate the family farm in Toppenish.
Elsie enjoyed playing golf with Amos and numerous friends. She especially enjoyed the Ladies Golf Group at Westwood West. She was still pulling her clubs around the course at the age of ninety-five!
Some of Elsie?s fondest memories are of fishing at Twin Lakes, Washington and their summer home at Lake Quesnel, British Columbia. Even though Amos always baited their hooks, Elsie caught the most fish!
She loved to read and play cards. She and Amos traveled with friends to Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, the Caribbean and Mexico. They wintered in Borrego Springs, California for 35 years.
Elsie is survived by her children, Lana (Donald) Gamache-Bradley of San Carlos, CA, Michael (Clara) Gamache of Yakima, WA, Terry Gamache of San Jose, Costa Rica, Janet (Jim) Davis of Mill Creek, WA; her grandchildren, Graham (Andrianna) Gamache of Wapato, WA, Dacia (Tim) Kerns of Coeur d?Alene, ID, Jason (Star) Davis of Everett, WA, and Alyson (Rob) Hervatine of Spokane, WA as well as eight great-grandchildren, Amara, Annabelle, Abigail, Jared, Caleb, Kale, Lily and Raddek, also her sister, Frances Glidewell of Puyallup, WA, sister-in-law, Theresa Wilton of Mt. Angel, OR and multiple nephews, nieces, cousins and good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos, daughter Cynthia, grandsons Derek and Aaron Gamache, daughter-in-law, Patricia Gamache; her sisters, Mary Getz, Frieda Kinnsfather, Ester Layton, Lydia Calahan, Lillian Wimer, Wilma Young, Nina Geroux and Katherine Stewart and brothers Alex Litzenberg, Jr., Walter, Donald, Daniel and Orville Litzenberg.
Vigil Services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. Interment will follow in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to LaSalle High School or Catholic Charities c/o Brookside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Hillcrest at Summitview Living Care, especially Tami, Michelle and Christy; Summitview Health Center staff, especially Katie, Sabrina and Amy for providing exceptional care of their mother. We are grateful to Sherry of Heartlinks Hospice and Palliative Care for her loving touch in Mom?s last days.
