  Josiah Beard and John Garland, of Iron Mountain, were unfortunate in their partridge hunt last Sunday. They drove their horse into the Sturgeon river to water him and he became unmanageable and swam across the stream, upsetting the rig, and the two men barely escaped drowning. They left the horse in the woods overnight and went to Iron Mountain on the train. Monday morning Garland returned and engaged the services of Byron Wilbur, who built a raft and ferried the horse across the river for him and Mr. Garland drove home, thankful that his life and that of his friend, Beard, had been spared, and that they had recovered their horse and rig. JOSIAH BEARD, PIONEER HERE, IS SUMMONED Conducted Blacksmith Shop For Many Years; Funeral On Sunday Josiah Beard, 62, a resident of Iron Mountain for the past 40 years, died at 10:30 last night at home, 614 West C Street, following an illness which continued most of the winter. A severe hemorrhage was the direct cause of death. Mr. Beard came to Iron Mountain in 1889 & shortly thereafter established a blacksmith shop. His hobby was dogs & he owned a number of them in his life. Besides his widow, 2 daughters & a son survive: Mrs. William Laydon & Mrs. Leo Kesler, this city, Ray, address unknown; 3 grandchildren; 3 brothers: Thomas, England, Fred, Vulcan & Herbert, this city; 2 sisters, Edith & Maria Beard, England.
