NEW BEDFORD -- Leo Henry Desrosiers, 80, of New Bedford died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long courageous battle with Alzheimers disease. He was the husband of Loraine (Tremblay) Desrosiers. They were married 55 years. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Aldege and Alice (Gamache) Desrosiers. He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, and a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1942. Mr. Desrosiers was a World War II Army veteran and held the rank of sergeant He was highly decorated and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, having fought in the battles of Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was formerly employed by the National Association of Letter Carriers for 31 years in the New Bedford branch until retiring in 1984. He played semi-pro baseball, center field position, for the Madeirense Club. He was a member of the Post One American Legion for over 50 years, and also belonged to the Royal Travellers. He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Church in New Bedford, Later in life he began running and ran many local races for over 20 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed baseball, jogging, travel and being with his family and friends. Survivors include his widow; three sons, Donald A. Desrosiers, and his wife, Debra, Robert D. Bobby Desrosiers, and his wife, Adelina-Leite, both of New Bedford, and Roger L. Desrosiers, and his wife, Stephanie, of Dartmouth; two daughters, Annette Rose and Pauline Desrosiers, both of New Bedford; five grandchildren; four brothers, Albert, Gerard and Aldege Desrosiers, all of New Bedford, and Eugene Desrosiers of Florida; three sisters, Irene Girouard of New Bedford, Alice Fiano of Florida and Yvette Cote of Middleboro; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass will be at 9 a. M. Thursday in St. Mary Church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.
