Deceased Name: FRANCIS A. SMITH
Francis Allen Smith, 80, of Newell Brook Road died Sunday at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.
He was born in Brunswick, a son of Newman and Beatrice Allen Smith, and attended Brunswick schools.
During World War II, Mr. Smith served in the Army Signal Corps.
On July 31, 1948, he married the former Casimira Barnes.
For several years, Mr. Smith worked at Bowdoin College. For 34 years he worked for the civil service in the public works department at Brunswick Naval Air Station.
He was a fan of Red Sox baseball. He was also a member of the Topsham American Legion post.
A son, F.A. Strickland Jr., died in 1970, and a daughter, Casimira F. Smith-Groh, died in 1995.
Surviving are his wife of Durham; two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Penny) Gamache of Durham and Mrs. Cornelius (Martha) Niven of Ruby, S.C.; a brother, Ralph of Illinois.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are private. Burial will be in Varney Cemetery, Brunswick. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, Brunswick.
