• Notes

  Nazier was one of the early Brunswick arrivals from Canada to work in the mills there. He is enumerated on the 1880 Federal census for Brunswick, Maine. He was one of my wifes Great grandfathers. His daughter Pamela Married Joseph Bois, who came to Brunswick about 1885. Unfortunately, there is no 1890 census available, however, Joseph and Pamela are enumerated on all of the Brunswick census's from 1900 to 1930. One must understand that the enumerators were not all versed in the canadian french pronunciations and would often spell their names in english, phonetically. That, coupled with the poor micro-film copies, has resulted in a lot of weird spellings of their names by the people who have prepared todays indices for the census's. So, if you can't find someone on a census that you know should be there, try another name in that family and you may find him/her in that listing. If that fails, do as I have often done, go through the census page by page expecting to see some strange spelling. Nazier is also enumerated on the 1881 Canada Census for L'Islet, Quebec. How that came about, I have no idea. The spelling of some of the names do not agree with the Brunswick census but the count is the same, 7 daughters and 4 sons. Just for the record, I will list the spelling of the names in the 1881 Canada cansus for, since they were written by french speaking censors, they are probably the correct spellings. Nazaire, Verginie, Verginie, Demerise, Lea, Adelle, Pamelas, Eugene, Gabrielle, Amadee, Joseph and Elmina. The 'Louis' added in some places is probably the same as the Christian name 'Marie' added to female names.
