- The late Matija Vlasic
On February 3, 1980, Matija Vlasi? died in Chicago. He was born in February 1903 in Kr?ka Vas, in the vicinity of the village of ?ate?.
He was married for 54 years to the former Angela Ko?ar .
In 1941, the occupying Germans moved the family to Germany. The deceased made great efforts to keep the family together abroad. They arrived in the United States on November 25, 1950. They took a ship to New York, from there they went to Newton, N.J. In 1951 they came to Chicago.
The funeral mass was held in the church of St. Stephen on Monday, February 11. Mass was celebrated and preached by Fr. Atanazi Lovren?i? OFM assisted by Fr. Fortunat Zorman OFM. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
Mourning for the late Matija: daughters Re?ka (Mar?i?), Palatine, Illinois; Marija (Kranjec), Sturgis, Michigan; Angela (Balaker), Carlsbad, California. Sons Franc Vlasi?, West Chicago, Illinois; Stanko Vlasi?, Chicago; Vinko Vlasi?, Thousand Oaks, California.
I met the late Matija Vlasi? and his family when they came to New York in November 1950. At that time, a hurricane raged in New York, which was so powerful that it was impossible to walk on the roads. Everyone depended on the food they had at home. The storm was lifting various objects and tearing signs from buildings. At that time, the Vlasic family were given shelter in the hall under the church of St. Cyril on the Eighth. I no longer remember what I offered them for refreshment, but the Vlasic family refused to eat it. When they found out that the deceased husband and father was terminally ill, they came to the shrine of Marija Pomagaj in Lemont. It was with sadness that I was told about their father's serious illness.
